Top 5 Free Android Widgets

One of the best design choices Google made for Android is to allow widgets on the home screen. The Android Market is full of widgets, and these are the top 5 free ones I’ve encountered.

…One of the best design choices Google made for Android is to allow widgets on the home screen. This took on additional significance when Android gained the ability a few versions back to have so many multiple, customizable home screens available. Widgets are tiny applets that sit on the home screen, displaying important information for the user and often providing a means to interact with that information. The Android Market is full of widgets, and these are the top 5 free ones I’ve encountered. Note that new widgets appear often, so this list only reflects the current crop.

Android Agenda Widget. This jewel provides a window into the user’s calendar, displaying a lot of information in a small space. The agenda can aggregate events from multiple calendars. The display can be customized in every way. In fact, there are more configurable settings than much bigger programs. This is really a collection of widgets, all of different sizes so you can choose the one that fits the screen space available. The…

Android 2.2 (Froyo) vs iPhone OS 4.0

Google’s open mobile OS Android is slowly taking over the market and has become a hot product for the company. It has now given Apple’s iOS 4 a sturdy rivalry with its feature rich Android 2.2 (Froyo).

…. But Android offers full support to Flash thus keeping the developers and users happy.
Gaming Social Networks: This was one of the best news for the gaming enthusiasts as iOS 4 bought with it the Xbox like social network for iPhone gamers. This feature remains absent from Android 2.2. Also iOS 4 has a much larger and better gaming base then Froyo.
Music: It is an undeniable fact that iPhone excels is playing music and integration with iTunes which certainly is huge selling point for the company. Android 2.2 however allows Over the Air (OTA) transfer to phone without having to touch the phone from PC or via any 3rd party stores. For streaming, Froyo offers a new Official plugin (Simplified media) that works with iTunes, Windows media player and lets users stream any media onDemand to their Android device.
The App war: Android offers about a half a number of apps (50,000) that are provided to iPhone users(180,000). But then that is something we expect to be balanced in the near future as its been only a while…

5 Big Reasons Why Android Developers Don’t Make Money

Android developers make 50x less money than iPhone developers. Read this article to find out why that is, and how Google can fix it.

…Distributing the apps for free meant a lot more people could try them and buy stuff from inside the app.
Android absolutely needs this in order to lure more developers to their platform and reward them in a better way. After all why spend the amount of time building an Android app when you can make 50x more on the iphone platform. For almost all developers, the choice is easy, and they build Android apps as an afterthought. This is why the same app on Android is usually of lower quality than the one on iphone.
Paypal has announced libraries for in-app purchases for Android. However, I’m sure developers would prefer a more integrated way of getting users pay with one click, perhaps with a Google Checkout account. This would also mean a higher sign-up rate for its Google Checkout business, which they’ve been ignoring lately.
2. Enabling paid apps in all countries

For some reason, Google is not enabling paid apps in too many countries, and they are moving extremely so to do it. I’m not sure if this is because…

Asus dumps Windows and wants Android for the EeePad tablet

Asus had decided to drop the idea of using Windows EC7 as OS for its upcoming tablet, in favor of the Android platform for the EeePad. The reason was simple: Asus considered that Google’s platform is better than Microsoft’s Windows. We don’t know yet what version of Andr

…2 Duo processor, video conferences and offers two convenient modes of character input-an embedded virtual keyboard or innovative hybrids keyboard/docking station design.
But if that is not enough to please you, the tablet has a 12 display, 0.3 megapixel webcam, stereo speakers, SIM slot, Polymer Battery and we can go on all day. It is a beautiful piece of technology. If Asus made a good choice by dumping Windows for the Android OS, we will have to wait and see. One fact is sure: the Apple iPad, finally has an real opponent, the Android powered Asus EeePad….

iOS vs Android | TheTechJournal.com

Google’s release of Android OS 2.2 Froyo also fueled competitive heat directed at iPhone, although Apple continued selling a record number of iPhones in the first calendar quarter of 2010, and largely focused attention on the new iPad in the second quarter. With Apple now gearing up for the launch of iPhone 4.

…of all impressions.

Apple has been on a tear over the last decade in introducing products that competitors (including much larger, more experienced, and formerly entrenched companies) haven’t been able to match. For nearly ten years of iPod introductions, Apple continually grew with little effective competition from Sony and Microsoft, largely creating the market for hard drive based MP3 players and subsequently taking over the flash memory MP3 player market before releasing the iPod touch, which has no real competition from anyone. The iPhone and iPad have followed similar trajectories, facing a series of ineffectual killers that didn’t even make a dent in Apple’s recession-busting sales records.
One difficulty in making comparison between Apple’s smartphone and alternatives running Android is that they’re not the same thing. One can compare iPhone hardware features against an Android model, for example, but the value of iPhone 4 isn’t just its hardware, it’s the integration of its hardware paired with the…

Android App Inventor vs Illumination Software Creator

Google’s new Android App Inventor is compared to another visual software creation tool.

…This week, Google has released the first version of Android App Inventor, a tool for visually developing applications for Android powered devices.
Being as I develop another visual software development tool (Illumination Software Creator), I’ve received a rather hefty pile of emails from people asking me my thoughts on it.
Let me be frank: I couldn’t be happier about it. I am, in a word, thrilled.
Any tool that helps to make computing fun and accessible to more people is A-OK in my book!
Along those lines: I don’t view App Inventor as a direct competitor to Illumination Software Creator in any way.
Google’s Android App Inventor is really a pretty standard development environment….

Google’s App Inventor For Android Now Open For The Public!

The new tool, App Inventor from Google is deceptive in its appearance.

…s unthinkable for a non-programmer or a student to even dream of creating apps for their mobiles. The power of this device lies in the fact that it will encourage people to think about creating apps on their own, and this is certainly a plus point where students are concerned, as it will create an interest in them.
Google App Inventor underwent a lot of testing for the past year, prior to being released to the public. Students around the United States have been given the opportunity to test it. Some students are said to have created dozens of apps for the Android phone, leading to the elimination of programming fear.

All sorts of apps can be created: simple games, informative and educational apps, quiz apps and many more. Apps can be built to store data created by users in a database. Want an app that lets you know your location? OR where your car is parked? Use the GPS-location sensor. Unable to take calls because…

Android Gets a Build-Your-Own-App App

Got an idea for a smartphone app? If you’ve got an Android phone you might be able to build it yourself, thanks to App Inventor for Android, a new Google Labs program for Windows, OS X, and Linux that’s designed to make building Android programs as easy as piecing blocks together.

…App Inventor is in closed beta at the moment, and Google says it’ll let folks in “soon” — you can sign up here. As you’ll see if you fill out the sign-up form, Google sees the program as an educational tool of particular interest to teachers and students.
It’s an exciting idea that’s more than slightly reminiscent of HyperCard, the brilliant visual programming tool that was a big deal on the Mac more than twenty years ago, and which is missed to this day. HyperCard or something similar would be a boon on the iPhone — even Steve Jobs has says he thinks so, although Apple apparently doesn’t have any interest in building such an application itself, and new restrictions in the iOS developer agreement prevent apps developed with the HyperCard-like RunRev from being distributed on the App Store.
(More and more, I think that the surface similarities between Android and iOS are less interesting than the fundamental differences in emphasis and philosophy — and the more different the two OSes get, the more…

LG plans Google Android tablet device

Like virtually every other hardware vendor, LG has announced plans to join the tablet PC revolution. It seems that LG might be following in HP’s footsteps, though, by abandoning the Windows 7 tablet prototype it has been promoting in favor of a tablet built on a mobile OS platform.

…The trend seems to be to develop tablet devices on the same mobile OS platforms used in smartphones. The Apple iPad uses iOS. The upcoming HP tablet will run on the WebOS platform it recently acquired with the purchase of Palm. The new LG tablet will run on Android, as does the Dell Streak, and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tape.
The Apple iPad has a significant headstart in the tablet market, leaving the vast array of competing tablets in the dust and with a steep climb to compete. However, for businesses and business professionals, alternate tablets may prove to be more compelling if they can deliver an equivalent experience to the Apple iPad while delivering things the iPad is missing like Flash compatibility or USB ports.
I have reached out to LG to confirm or deny whether the announced Android tablet will replace the previously revealed UX10 prototype, or if LG plans to launch both a Windows 7 tablet and an Android tablet. LG has not yet responded to my inquiries.
LG did not announce pricing or any…
