Millions of Android users hit by malicious data theft app

An app distributed by Google’s Android Market has collected private data from millions of users and forwarded it to servers China, validating Apple’s uniquely strong stance on mobile security in the iPhone App Store.

…Apps must also be signed by a certificate created by Apple, which makes it much harder for malicious developers to anonymously distribute software designed to cause problems or steal data. Apple’s security measures also make such efforts less attractive financially, despite the iOS platform’s installed base being much larger than Android’s….

Google Plans To Make $10 Billion A Year From Mobile

In the second quarter of 2010, Google posted revenues $5.1 billion with advertising accounting for 96% of its revenues, 66% of its total revenue. Not intending to rely on traditional search advertising, Google is said to be readying a huge push into mobile with the aim of securing revenues of $10 billion a year with the help of its Android OS

…Think about it, that’s just $10 per Android user. With Google setting its sights on recommendation engines, building Admob (its mobile advertising platform) and incorporating location-based advertising, it certainly could achieve that.
I can’t see Google amassing a billion Android users just yet though.
Google will undoubtedly find new ways to monetize its mobile offerings, whilst keeping its operating system free for all. Although one billion Android users is a tough expectation, the smartphone market continues to experience huge growth and an increasing number of manufacturers looking to the…

…One of the best design choices Google made for Android is to allow widgets on the home screen. This took on additional significance when Android gained the ability a few versions back to have so many multiple, customizable home screens available. Widgets are tiny applets that sit on the home screen, displaying important information for the user and often providing a means to interact with that information. The Android Market is full of widgets, and these are the top 5 free ones I’ve encountered. Note that new widgets appear often, so this list only reflects the current crop.

Android Agenda Widget. This jewel provides a window into the user’s calendar, displaying a lot of information in a small space. The agenda can aggregate events from multiple calendars. The display can be customized in every way. In fact, there are more configurable settings than much bigger programs. This is really a collection of widgets, all of different sizes so you can choose the one that fits the screen space available. The…

…Ready to suck down your sixth Google Maps for Android update in the past six months? Good. Version 4.4 has just been shoved out into the bright, hopeful world that we call home, with this one bringing about an easier way to find places around you. With the update will come an entirely new logo, as a dedicated ‘Places’ icon allows users to quickly look up nearby places in a Yelp-esque manner. If you tend to search for similar things regardless of where you are, you can load up your own personalized categories to make finding frequent searches that much easier (think “gas station” or “In N Out”). There’s also Place Pages, which now shows the operating hours of listed businesses, compass direction and distance from your location. It’s available now for all Android phones using v1.6 or newer, and if you’re rocking a BlackBerry, you can expect the Place Page to head your way soon….

Android 2.2 (Froyo) vs iPhone OS 4.0

Google’s open mobile OS Android is slowly taking over the market and has become a hot product for the company. It has now given Apple’s iOS 4 a sturdy rivalry with its feature rich Android 2.2 (Froyo).

…. But Android offers full support to Flash thus keeping the developers and users happy.
Gaming Social Networks: This was one of the best news for the gaming enthusiasts as iOS 4 bought with it the Xbox like social network for iPhone gamers. This feature remains absent from Android 2.2. Also iOS 4 has a much larger and better gaming base then Froyo.
Music: It is an undeniable fact that iPhone excels is playing music and integration with iTunes which certainly is huge selling point for the company. Android 2.2 however allows Over the Air (OTA) transfer to phone without having to touch the phone from PC or via any 3rd party stores. For streaming, Froyo offers a new Official plugin (Simplified media) that works with iTunes, Windows media player and lets users stream any media onDemand to their Android device.
The App war: Android offers about a half a number of apps (50,000) that are provided to iPhone users(180,000). But then that is something we expect to be balanced in the near future as its been only a while…
