Current rumour states that Android 3.0 will see Android get a complete visual overhaul but that’s about all we know about the possible future direction of the mobile OS. In no particular order, here are 10 things we would also like to see in the Android 3.0

…Android 2.2, AKA “Froyo,” was announced amid wild phone-nerd scenes a couple of months back, although we’re yet to see much of it in the wild. The only phone currently running a non-hacked version of Google’s latest OS incarnation is the Nexus One, with all the other Google-powered smartphone users of the world still anxiously scrolling up and down the ‘About Phone’ page waiting for an over-the-air upgrade to arrive. But that won’t stop us getting excited about Android 3.0, which Google is referring to as “Gingerbread” - and is believed to be preparing for arrival in time for this year’s autumn/winter smartphone collection.Current rumour states that Android 3.0 will see Android get a complete visual overhaul thanks to the hiring of some big names in the user interface scene, but that’s about all we know about the possible future direction of the mobile OS. So what else would we like to see in the Android 3.0? This lot. In no particular order. 1. An end to custom user interfaces This is one rumour we’d like to…

Could Android and Chrome OS sideline other Linux distros?

Ask someone to name a Linux distro, and if you don’t get a blank look, chances are good that they’ll say Ubuntu. After all, Canonical’s distro is regarded by many as the “default” Linux distro. But could Google’s two-prong offensive with both Android and Chrome OS sideline other distros and push them into obscurity?

…a PC and give Windows the shove, then neither of these operating systems would suit your needs unless you radically changed the way you work.
Problem is, many people are radically changing the way they work. People are increasingly happy with cut-down PCs that come in the form of netbooks, and cut-down operating systems such as the iPhone OS on the iPhone and iPad, and Android and Symbian on smartphones. Folks are ditching expensive, resource-hungry desktop applications for smaller, lighter, cheaper, more focussed apps on devices such as iPads.
The problems facing Linux is that increasingly, people are turning away from monolithic operating systems (unfortunately, at the same time, we’re turning to walled gardens/prisons, but that’s another story). And Google is set to make its own Linux flavors a lot more available.
First, we’re starting to see Android on installed on netbooks alongside Windows. Sure, small moves, but could be quite useful and appealing to those with Android handsets. Then there’s Google’s…

Google’s Android takes No 2 spot from iPhone

Google Inc displaced iPhone maker Apple Inc to become the second most popular provider of smartphone software in the United States during the first quarter, the latest sign of the increasing competition…

…T wireless network in the United States, dropped to third place as its share of the smartphone operating system market remained flat quarter-over-quarter at 21 percent.Unlike Apple, Google offers its Android software to other phone-makers. In April, Google said a dozen vendors currently offer 34 different devices that feature the Android software.NPD analyst Ross Rubin said the strong showing of Android phones during the first quarter owed to promotions by Verizon Wireless, which he said has expanded its buy-one-get-one offer. Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.”As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining smartphone market share,” Rubin said in a statement. While the Android operating system is gaining momentum in the market, Google has had less luck with its Nexus One phone, the Android-based device it designed in close collaboration with HTC. Misreported NPD data does not indicative of smartphone marke

Apple Inc. on Tuesday questioned recent data showing smartphones using Google’s Android operating system surpassing iPhone sales in the United States, and said there are no signs that the competition is gaining in the smartphone market

…5:52pm EDT
Actually, Android is expected to become the number 2 platform globally by 2012, so Apple should expect their global market share to be surpassed by Android very soon. It’s literally impossible for Apple to compete against Android with just one phone. The world has always demanded variety. That’s why, despite the quality of the iPhone, there are far more people buying alternative models of smartphones than iPhones.
As for the 51 million iPhone figure touted by the Apple spokesperson, that’s actually not as large and formidable as it sounds. In the first quarter of this year, global smartphone shipments were at 54 million units. In other words, more smartphones ship in the first quarter of this year than Apple has ever sold since it started selling phones in 2007. With Android on so many different phones, it’s not going to be difficult to pass a number like 51 million in global sales. I don’t know who Apple is trying to kid with those statements, but anyone following the market trends would know…

10 things Google should change for Android 2.2

10 things Google should change for Android 2.2 FroYo is coming - what should it do to improve Android?

…Android’s greatest strength is also its biggest problem. The constant, lightning-fast pace of development has left many users out in the cold when it comes to getting the latest OS updates - just ask anyone who owns an HTC Hero how they feel about being stuck with Android 1.5 in this day and age.But the mobile OS marches on regardless, with the latest update, Android 2.2 - known as Frozen Yogurt or “FroYo” for short - rumoured to be due any day. So what should Android 2.2 do? How can it improve on an OS that’s already stormed the world during 2010?These are our suggestions, should anyone from Google be reading and have a bit of spare time this afternoon. 1. An ‘Update All’ or ‘Auto Update’ option for appsYes, we understand Google needs to cover its arse in getting us all to click ‘OK’ on the privacy options when installing an app the first time, but must we go through this rigmarole again when installing simple version updates of our apps? When you’ve got 30 apps on your phone and eight of them all…

…Since Google announced Google Maps Navigation for the Android phones in the UK, we’re been inundated with readers asking how to get the service on your phone. The original line was that you could simple search Android Market for the application, but simply looking for ‘Google Navigation’ won’t get you anywhere. We’ve spoken to Google and got the official word on the easiest way to be getting free sat nav on your mobile phone.A few limitations though - it’s only available on Android phones right now (sorry iPhone users, however there is reason for hope). And HTC Hero owners: you’ll have to wait until at least June to access the Navigation service, as that’s when the necessary upgrade is coming. But if you’re one of the other Android owners, here’s what you have to do:First of all, fire up Android Market, and search for ‘Google Maps’. If you’ve recently upgraded it will say ‘installed’ - just download it again as it will now include Google Maps Navigation. After that, simply open up Google Maps as you usually…

iPhone OS 4 vs Android: Why Apple Just Lost the Game

Today’s announcement of the 4th revision of the iPhone OS has started the battle once more. This time, though, the clear winner is more apparent to me. So let’s take a look and see why.

…T cell phone signal. Boo… otherwise, I’d have gotten an IPhone. No question about that. I have an 32 gB iPod Touch and it’s a wonderful machine. I have lots of music on it, I’ve watched movies on it, and am able to seamlessly download and send e-mail on it. I decided to acquire my own portable Verizon hotspot so that I can use the Touch and my new Apple computer on the net wherever I go (along as there is a Verizon cell phone signal). It took a bit of doing to get that up and functioning properly. AND (Ta da!) I switched to Mac after 23 years of PC/Windows use. One can say that I am a PC power user, but in the process of switching jobs, I had to turn in my Dell laptop (very loaded machine) so instead of trying to duplicate all that, having to buy not only a new machine and new software, I got myself a lovely MacBook. OSX SnowLeopard is superb. So stable and so intuitively correct. I put VMWare Fusion in it too along with a copy of Windows 7 Pro, “just in case,” but the my new Microsoft Office is the Mac…
