5 Things Google Still Needs to Fix in Android

Any day now, the Evo 4G is going to get an over-the-air update to Android 2.2 (aka Froyo), complete with marquee features such as the abi

…push for consistency, this is really an issue? there are 4 or 5 different flavors of android skins, not including the custom roms you can get. I think that the differences are a good thing. even if they were the same, what would be next? Consistency of the hardware? this phone’s got an amoled screen, but this one has hdmi, that isn’t consistent, and it confuses people. no, it’s good to have options.android market, both apple and google need to rethink their markets. there was an article on this specifically not too long ago about how they both suck balls, and I agree. the argument you can lay at google’s feet with the android os can be laid at apple’s feet with the ios. regarding the lack of spell check, that doesn’t matter, and use of an android device would show you why.ease of killing apps, not an issue, if an app is not active, it isn’t using resources, if an app comes alive to update info, you can set how often that occurs. do some searches on how google handles inactive apps.runaway apps, is truly an…

Independent App Stores Take On Google’s Android Market

But it’s all kosher because, unlike Apple, Google allows for multiple app stores to exist on the Android operating system.

…Multiple app stores can exist on the Android phone and apps don’t have to be approved before they hit the official Android app store.

In an intensely crowded app world, getting noticed is the big challenge. Finding Facebook, Shazam or Pandora on the Android Market is easy. But for smaller apps like Time Lapse or Zum Zum, the key to survival is finding enough eyeballs.
There are 50,000 apps in the Android Market, while your phone lists only 50 apps at a time, says Hoogsteder. You are seeing just a fraction of what’s out there.
That’s why many new Android app stores such as AndroLib and AppBrain have focused on being meta-stores, places that aggregate and let you search Android apps. But to actually download the apps, users have to go to the Android Market.
AndSpot and SlideMe are a step ahead. They are trying to convince enough developers to publish apps directly to their stores, in addition to offering them on the official Google Market. So users who have SlideMe or AndSpot will never have to go to the…

…Spreading the written word on as many devices as possible, Amazon is releasing a Kindle application for Google Android machines that run 1.6 Donut and above.

For US citizens, the Android app will grant access to over half a million e-books, but international users will have certain restrictions. Kindle newspapers, magazines and blogs will not be available on the Android version though.
Does Kindle availability on third-party gadgets and computers help Kindle hardware sales or hurt them? Would I really need a Kindle when I will be able to use most of its features on my MyTouch?

Google Android 2.2 Froyo Running Adobe Flash 10.1 (Video)

Make it “Photo and Video of the Day.” What you are staring at is rumored to be Google’s Android 2.2 “Froyo” operating system running on a Nexus One. …Make it Photo and Video of the Day. What you are staring at is rumored to be Google’s Android 2.2 Froyo operating system running on a Nexus One. One of the benefits (or blights, depending on your allegiances) of Google’s next smartphone OS is that Adobe Flash 10.1 is integrated. If this clip is genuine and is not simply a modified Android 2.1 or earlier ROM (I am not cognizant of an existing Android ROM that can run full Flash this well), then Ryan Stewart, the video’s uploader and self-professed Adobe evangelist, makes a cogent argument for Flash and Froyo.

Although the 1GHz Nexus One is powerful for a smartphone, it is a weakling compared to computers, yet Google’s device has minimal problems running certain Flash video and 3D content, as Ryan demonstrates. Noteworthy also is that Android 2.2 looks good and has more taskbar icons than before!…

Google’s Android OS Headed To The Chevy Volt

Earlier this month, General Motors revealed they had partnered up with a major tech company to completely revamp their telematics system, OnStar. Motor Trend is now reporting that partnership is with Google. If the rumor’s true, the Chevy Volt will be the first Android-based vehicle to hit the road.

…But having the next-gen version of OnStar be Android-based unlocks opportunities beyond that of just your smart-phone. Not just for GM and Google…but for any automaker interested in on-board tech. An open-source cross-platform system could easily be extended to automakers like Th!nk or ZAP motors. Considering Google’s cofounders are heavily invested in Tesla Motors, it’s not that far fetched.

Android-based apps, that are vehicle agnostic, would allow drivers to share information about their cars and more importantly build communities. Instead of information being limited to only Volt drivers, that data would be accessible to anyone. Private residences could easily notify other EV owners if their home charging station is available for use….

General Motors partners with Google for Android-powered cars

…jreed91 Your comment comes off as fear-mongering and irrational, but come to think of it, it’s amazing how much powere Google will have over a person’s personal life.Google would have a lot of information about you - right from all your communications (assuming you use google services) your email, your friends, your address, your transcripted voicemails, your blog, your photos, your videos, the videos you watch like/dislike, your social life, your likes/dislikes when it comes to both commodities and services, the books you read/share like/dislike, the news feeds you read (basically the types of site you visit), your navigation history in real world, your health history/concerns (assuming you research something online), your energy usage at home, your car, your internet connection… well this list keeps on growing. Now I don’t assert that Google is evil or anything. Or that you don’t have other options, or that Google will have all this info at the same time (because you may not use a lot of their…

…Those with a Google Nexus One, a Motorola Droid/Milestone, or a Sony Xperia X10 can use Nintendo’s Wii controller to play games on their Android smartphones.

As the video demonstrates, the Nexus One with Android Eclair 2.1 can synchronize to a Nintendo Wii-mote via Bluetooth. Fire up an N64 emulator, and you are reliving the classics, back when Nintendo’s cartridge system pumped out heavily blurred graphics due to the low-resolution, compressed textures, and ample amount of anti-aliasing used. Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Diddy Kong Racing, and Banjo Kazooie continue to be among my most cherished games to this day. Ahh childhood.

…Shanzhai is reporting about an upcoming Apple iPad lookalike that is running Google’s Android smartphone operating system with an iPhone OS knock-off graphics interface. The device’s price is purportedly in the $150 range, which would make it quite a bargain since most Android tablets are going to cost well above that.

These Chinese manufacturers do not take long, do they? The iPad was shown to the world only a few months ago, and now there is already a tablet that apes Apple’s in every way. iPod, iPhone, and MacBook imitations and plain replicas are everywhere in China. Shanzhai says that this iPad uses a 600MHz ARM processor, and it appears to come with a free faux-leather portfolio! Since there are not scans of the tablet’s back, I cannot tell whether it is an Apple counterfeit or simply a lookalike with the manufacturer’s own insignia (or unbranded).
