LG plans Google Android tablet device

Like virtually every other hardware vendor, LG has announced plans to join the tablet PC revolution. It seems that LG might be following in HP’s footsteps, though, by abandoning the Windows 7 tablet prototype it has been promoting in favor of a tablet built on a mobile OS platform.

…The trend seems to be to develop tablet devices on the same mobile OS platforms used in smartphones. The Apple iPad uses iOS. The upcoming HP tablet will run on the WebOS platform it recently acquired with the purchase of Palm. The new LG tablet will run on Android, as does the Dell Streak, and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tape.
The Apple iPad has a significant headstart in the tablet market, leaving the vast array of competing tablets in the dust and with a steep climb to compete. However, for businesses and business professionals, alternate tablets may prove to be more compelling if they can deliver an equivalent experience to the Apple iPad while delivering things the iPad is missing like Flash compatibility or USB ports.
I have reached out to LG to confirm or deny whether the announced Android tablet will replace the previously revealed UX10 prototype, or if LG plans to launch both a Windows 7 tablet and an Android tablet. LG has not yet responded to my inquiries.
LG did not announce pricing or any…

Analysts Warn Of Mass Defections From BlackBerry, Nokia

Analysts today warned that Nokia and RIM were about to see their market share plunge in the near future thanks to Apple and Google. Goldman Sachs’ Simona Jankowski pointed to checks at retail that showed BlackBerries were no longer the top-selling phones at US carriers outside of AT&T

…You all act like selling through fewer carriers or using less models of phones gives you some kind of prize.

You get no prize for it.

When RIM has sold its best ever quarter - the correct response, is congratulations.

That’s not a failure, but a success.

Still we know RIM and Nokia, crystal balling it, have some competitive weaknesses, and their sales are coming downmarket.

Is apple kicking butt? Yes. But Apple isn’t the story… Apple won’t go downmarket, where frankly at this point Nokia and RIM are increasingly cornered…its how fast Android leaves its North American base, and how well it kicks RIM and Nokia in countries like Brazil, India, Malaysia, etc….thats the story…if it materializes.

outside the U.S. though, RIM sales are still strong, Nokia’s sales of low end/cheap smartphones where their real competition is still Chinese knockoffs…it remains strong, Nokia is considered a premium brand over the generic chinese knockoff….

Switching from iPhone to Android

After three years as a loyal iPhone user, I’m thinking about making the switch to a phone running Google Android. I’m looking for something new, Android is looking good nowadays, and Apple’s creepy corporate culture is wearing me down.

…T charts said that I had excellent coverage.
Then came the EVO. I canceled my iphone, sold it on Ebay, and jumped to Sprint. I have a family share plan, which means that I instantly saved around 20 bucks. I also have not had one dropped call since I have been using the phone! I’m fortunate enough to have 4g in the city that I live in. If you don’t have 4g, the Evo is still an excellent 3g device.
Okay, so now this is my take on the Evo. Great internet browsing, google voice is flawless, clear call quality, excellent speaker, very responsive, love the widgets, and I love the screen. Battery life is okay, App store still needs some work, power button is awkward, and I believe they could have done away with two or three of the touch sensitive buttons. I feel like I’m pressing to many buttons to get where I need to be.
When I compare the iphone to the Evo the only thing I can say is, “The iphone is just simple.” Steve Jobs has been successful with this device because they are all about parsimony.” BUT if you…

Dark Side Arises for Phone Apps - WSJ.com

In one incident, Google pulled dozens of unauthorized mobile-banking apps from its Android Market in December. The apps, priced at $1.50, were made by a developer named “09Droid” and claimed to offer access to accounts at many of the world’s banks. The apps were more useless than malicious, but could have been updated to capture banking info.

…By SPENCER E. ANTE As smartphones and the applications that run on them take off, businesses and consumers are beginning to confront a budding dark side of the wireless Web. Online stores run by Apple Inc., Google Inc. and others now offer more than 250,000 applications such as games and financial tools. The apps have been a key selling point for devices like Apple’s iPhone. But concerns are growing among security researchers and government officials that efforts to keep out malicious software aren’t keeping up with the apps craze. In one incident, Google pulled dozens of unauthorized mobile-banking apps from its Android Market in December. OLPC Promises XO-3 Tablet By 2011

OLPC further promises that early models will run Google’s Android operating system, but later versions will run another open source Linux OS of their choice.

…OLPC XO-3
OLPC has always envisioned itself as saving the world, one laptop-armed child at a time. Their initial attempts with the XO laptop had to overcome economic and political obstacles, but somehow, building a super-thin tablet that can do everything will make it all better. If not, it will at least look really cool. None of this is surprising.
What is surprising, however, is the specs on their promised tablet: multilingual, multitouch-screen keyboard with haptic feedback, Wi-Fi, high-quality video (1080p full-HD encode and decode), integrated video and still cameras, high-performance 3D graphics, Flash 10 Internet, and two-way teleconferencing. All of this will be squeezed into a cardboard-thin tablet and sell for $100.

OLPC further promises that early models will run Google’s Android operating system, but later versions will run another open source Linux OS of their choice. The original XO laptop ran Sugar OS, a Linux mash-up of their own creation. But Microsoft screamed bloody murder and managed to…

How to install Android on your iPhone

Here’s how to install Google’s Android OS on your iPhone. Be forewarned, though: This hack isn’t for the faint of heart.

…Here’s how to install Google’s Android OS on your iPhone. Be forewarned, though: This hack isn’t for the faint of heart.
Maybe you want to liberate your iPhone from Apple’s clutches. Maybe you just want to tinker with something new. Either way, you’ve seen Android running on the iPhone, and you want to try it for yourself.
Still a Work in Progress
Although this port does everything that you expect your smartphone to be able to do, it isn’t usable for day-to-day activities just yet - I haven’t implemented any power-management functions, so a fully charged iPhone running Android will last only an hour or so.
A few bugs and performance issues remain, too, so while the phone will be usable, it won’t be fast. If you do something unexpected (such as forcing the iPhone off), there is a small chance that you may end up restoring your device. However, it is impossible for any bugs to brick or disable your iPhone permanently.
Finally, media syncing is not working, so loading your media onto your phone is kind…

Google: We created Android to stop an Apple-dominated future

Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote. The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform.

…Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote. The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform. Gundotra didn’t mention Jobs by name but left little mystery that he was being blamed for creating a dystopic mobile environment not unlike the “1984″ Apple once criticized.”If we did not act, we faced a draconian future where one man, one phone, one carrier was the future,” he said. “That’s a future we don’t want.”…

…It was only a matter of time before Google managed to wedge itself into the electric car game. But the search giant isn’t building an EV of its own–it’s teaming up with OnStar to develop a bunch of new navigation features on the Android app for the upcoming Chevy Volt EV. The new features, set to be exhibited this week at the Google I/O conference and shown in the video below, will allow Volt users to access a new “Navigation” tab that displays the current location of their Volt on Google Maps along with their location relative to the car. The OnStar screen will also let users search for destinations on Google Maps via voice, send the destination to OnStar by phone, and have OnStar turn-by-turn directions waiting when they get back to their vehicle. Don’t let this sway your decision to purchase a Volt, though–the Google navigation features won’t be available on the Volt application when it launches. Instead, Chevy and Google plan to integrate them into a later update. The Volt app will have a number of…

Google to push Adobe Flash with Android 2.2 update | Electro

Flash on Android 2.2

…Google will heavily promote Flash when users upgrade to Android 2.2, some phone owners have discovered early. Adobe-made pages for both the Droid and Nexus One already exist that will load after the update and suggest a range of sites that will work using Flash 10.1 for Android. The samples on offer vary from video sites like the BBC and Sony Pictures to gaming like Kongregate and South Park Studios. The intro pages hint strongly that Flash 10.1 will be preinstalled with Android 2.2 rather than simply an optional install and reflect Google’s plans to…
