As big as Google is, Nexus One online store’s failure shows

Google Inc.s decision to stop selling its Nexus One Android smartphone through its online store might disappoint some customers hoping to limit the role of wireless carriers in the smartphone buying process.

…T’s network. Customers can still buy Nexus One from Google’s online store, but it isn’t clear for how much longer, as Google plans to stop selling them entirely on the Web once stock has increased in retail stores. Google’s Web presence will eventually become a showcase for Android phones, Rubin said. At the time of the announcement of the Nexus One in January, analysts and Google seemed to value the marketing concept of online smarpthone sales as a bigger idea than the Nexus One device itself. As it turns out, however, it’s really all about the device. Rubin said at the time that the Google online store and smartphones that access the Web are a great way to support Google’s core business of advertising, even adding the Google wasn’t trying to make a profit on sales of the Nexus One hardware. Google also explained the online philosophy in a blog post in January by Mario Queiroz, vice president of product management. “The goal of this new consumer channel is to provide an efficient way to connects Google’s…

Android: How to change the Google Account without hard reset

This blog post explain the change the Google Account in an Android phone without hard resetting the phone.

…I own an Android Dev Phone 1, also called ADP1. The phone prompted to setup a Google Account as the very first step, before I can start using it. For the Google Account, I used my credentials for Google Apps Standard Edition , though I also have a regular GMail account.
I supply my Google Apps credentials each time I wipe off (hard reset) the phone. Though optional, I wipe off the phone’s data whenever I update my phone with a new ROM. Following the official and non official upgrades, I’m currently running CyanogenMod 4.2.14.1 on my ADP1.
Then came a day when I did not want to wipe off the data but only wanted to change the Google Account associated with the phone. This was the day when I wanted to play with Google Buzz which requires a GMail or non Google Apps account. I googled around and found solutions suggesting:

Clear data for Gmail and Gmail storage under Manage Applications
Clear data for Google Apps and you will see a message in the Android’s notification bar to setup a new Google account.

None of…

Why U.S. Android Handset Sales Are Outpacing the iPhone

More Google Android phones were sold during the first quarter of 2010 in the U.S. than iPhones. Customers of Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. carrier in terms of subscribers, can’t buy an iPhone, but they can choose from a wide range of different Google Android smartphones.

…T) are responsible for this surge in Android sales. This effect is much more likely a result of Verizon entering the consumer smartphone market with an option rather than people flocking to Android for the sake of Android.

Carrier lock in is still a big factor in the US. A decent portion of those people who bought Droids this time around would most likely consider the iphone if it was available on Verizon. Lets see if these numbers hold up over time in general, and especially if Apple launches the iPhone on Verizon.

What would be a more interesting statistic to discuss is the motivation behind this shift. You can’t tease the motivation out from just the raw sales numbers. I wouldn’t assume people bought Android it because they had any particular dislike of the iphone or strong preference to google or motorola although some people may have.

Nonetheless, Apple should pay attention to the trend and adjust their distribution/marketing strategy if needed. It could be a significant challenge to their position,…

With an ongoing parade of changes, Google has been steadily bringing its mobile site closer in line with Google.com’s desktop experience.
Last week the search giant refurbished image search and added Place pages for iPhones and Android phones accessing Google from the browser. On Wednesday, Google made over its general search results page this time for both the desktop and smartphone.
On the desktop, a Google search will soon show a column of extra options that help you narrow your search. This additional helper menu appeared almost exactly a year ago, in May 2009, as an easily overlooked button heading up the search results page (see image below). Starting today, that column will be attached by default to the desktop view.
Google’s sidebar-filter modifications don’t manifest exactly the same on iPhone and Android, however, as they do on the desktop and that’s a good thing. The constricted screen size of a handheld device calls for adaptations in…

Google: Numbers favor Android over iPhone | The Open Road

Google Android shows strong developer and customer growth, which has Apple and Microsoft increasingly worried and willing to take action. Read this blog post by Matt Asay on The Open Road.

…. This makes sense, given that RIM’s focus is on the enterprise environment. Advertisers aren’t going to pay a lot of money to advertise on the Blackberry platform because construction workers and state employees aren’t using their Blackberries to consume content and make purchasing decisions. The graph is significant because it shows that in March, the Android platform passed the iPhone in mobile ad requests. This kind of data is extremely speculative, but a reasonable explanation for this is that advertisers are spending more of their money on Android than on iPhone, which could mean that they believe that there’s more money to be made on Android, which could indicate that Android is increasing in popularity. Again, it’s all speculative. Like this

Learn All About How A Hacker Runs Google’s Android On Apple

…David Wang is a hacker, but he does not do anything wrong. In fact he is a part of a group called The iPhone Dev Team. Wang and the team members are dedicated to hacking the iPhone. They try to use different kinds of software in the iPhone. They have been largely successful in hacking the iPhone and uploading Android of Google on the iPhone.
The iPhone by Apple has been closely guarded and the company has not been letting any secrets out. Apple has not talked about loading any other platform on the phone, but the present uploading of the Android program by David has made it a first time. This means that several other programs can be added to the Apple iPhone. The addition of other applications will help to make the applications better and will widen the use for the phone all across.
The fact that David Wang has been using the iPhone with dual operating system is a great plus. This means that you do not have to remove the existing operating system, but only need to add the Android operating system to the…
