Android 2.2 Froyo source code available today

It’s still not hitting the bulk of Nexus Ones as far as we can tell, but for what it’s worth, Google has unleashed the source code for Android 2.2 today, which is a solid sign that the code’s been bulletproofed to the Open Handset Alliance’s satisfaction and is ready for deployment across a number of phones from different manufacturers and carriers

…Colours I get the feeling that updates are likely to be quicker this time. Many of the tentacles that Sense needed to implant in the OS lose their necessity with the advent of Froyo e.g. USB tethering, data backup etc. Now that Google have done so much back end foundation work, things do not need to be as complicated for future updates. If Google do a reasonable job on the UI with Gingerbread then many of the handset front ends may well become themes and widget packs provided free for their customers rather than being too obtrusive. We will see….

Google: Android fragmentation ‘is a boogeyman, a red herring

…Google’s Dan Morrill, open source and compatibility program manager in the Android team, just penned a lengthy diatribe against the very concept of fragmentation on the official Android Developers Blog, basically saying it doesn’t exist. Actually, the language is a little more colorful:
“Because it means everything, it actually means nothing, so the term is useless. Stories on ‘fragmentation’ are dramatic and they drive traffic to pundits’ blogs, but they have little to do with reality. ‘Fragmentation’ is a bogeyman, a red herring, a story you tell to frighten junior developers. Yawn.”
Sure, as Android goes, the term “fragmentation” has meant moderately different things in different contexts over the past couple years — fair enough. But the fact remains that releasing six major revisions of any platform within the span of 19 months (four of which are in heavy user circulation) is unprecedented and potentially unsettling to manufacturers and consumers alike. Your average Joe isn’t going to understand why,…

Android Gingerbread is ‘planned for Q4 2010′

While we’re all busy laboring in the shadow of Android 2.2’s impending release, here’s Google’s sneaky first indication of the next version’s release

…I was a 15yr old kid hanging out with my 16yr old best bud at his first job. He was doing work experience in a cafe for Christmas and had to put the adverts in the store window using a stencil and some snow spray. When he wasn’t looking I stenciled a ‘J’ over the ‘c’ in Mince Pie, broadcasting to the street that this cafe was the place to come to get your ‘Hot Minge Pies’. Unfortunately it got my buddy kicked out of the job and we haven’t really ever got back in contact, but I still feel it was worth it….

Eric Schmidt spreading word of an Android-based Google table

According to a report by The New York Times, Google’s apparently looking to get into the tablet game itself.

…I wonder why they’re burying the lead… all the “from an inside source” info on the Courier!According to a Microsoft employee who has seen the device, the Courier is about as big as an ordinary paperback and folds out to reveal two screens. Users would be able to take notes on the device with a pen, and easily drag and share content between the screens. But Microsoft engineers have concerns about the battery power needed to keep the two screens going, these people said. And internally the company is struggling to identify the right market. At first the idea was to market the Courier for designers and architects, but lately the company is thinking of a broader market of consumers and so would include e-books, magazines and other media content on the device.Microsoft engineers have talked about getting the Courier out by early 2011, though no firm decision has been made to sell the product….

Google TV: Android + Intel +Logitech + Sony in the living rm

Not too much to see yet, but if the NY Times says so…

…There’s not a lot to see here — in fact, there’s nothing at all to see at this point — but The New York Times has it on good authority that Google, Intel, and Sony have teamed up to develop an Android-powered internet platform using Atom processors for televisions and set-top boxes. Dubbed Google TV, the apparent mantra seems to be making web app navigation (Twitter, Picasa, etc.) as easy as changing the channel. Joining the fun will be the peripheral casanovas at Logitech for, you guessed it, peripherals. It certainly isn’t novel territory, from as far back as WebTV to as recent as Yahoo! widgets — and from Google itself, be it Motoblur boxes or Dish Network trials — but the proof will be in the pudding, and for now, mum’s the word on any more concrete details. As they say, stay tuned….

Google and Dish Network testing TV search on Android-based s

We’ve definitely heard of a few different Android-based satellite and cable boxes in the past year, but it looks like Google’s exploring a real move

…We’ve definitely heard of a few different Android-based satellite and cable boxes in the past year, but it looks like Google’s exploring a real move into living room: the Wall Street Journal reports that El Goog and Dish Network are testing a TV search service on a new box that runs on “elements” of Android. (We’re taking that to mean it’s a stripped-down version of the OS tailored for a set-top, not some totally crazy remix.) The box features a QWERTY remote, and users can search both Dish content and other services like YouTube, which sounds like the same riff TiVo’s trying to pull off with the Premiere. Unfortunately, none of this seems destined to hit consumers anytime soon — the WSJ also says the trial “is limited to a very small number of Google employees and their families and could be discontinued at any time.” Okay, but can we at least get some hands-on pictures first?…

Live coverage of Google’s Android Gphone mobile OS announcement

Google finally tells all!

…A time. Andy’s on the call now. 9:25AM PT - Q: “My question goes out to the handset manufacturers — does your involvement in OHA mean you won’t be participating in other mobile OSs?” Peter from HTC: “We actually look at this as a good opportunity to innovate… we believe this is more opportunity, we can do more… our commitment to other OSs is the same.” Zander is babbling on about being committed to open source and open platforms again. “We do have some commitments with some of our carrier partners, but we’ve been working a lot on this kind of strategy.”9:27AM PT - Andy answering our pal Om’s question: “All of this software will be available… within one week’s time… handsets will be available in the second half of 2008.”9:28AM PT - WSJ: “Where does Google take it from here? How will Google’s apps and services work with this platform? Will there be a prominent position for them on the handset?” Rubin: “One of the interesting things about Google’s business is the flexibility and relevance… part of…

Android Figurines

Google to release a series of authorized Android robot figurines, starting with an initial run of 12 designs in blind boxes (collect ‘em all!).

…Physically expressing the love that you feel for your Android-powered device can be difficult — hugging and caressing the phone gets old after a while, truth be told. Good news, though: artist Andrew Bell has teamed up with Google to release a series of authorized Android robot figurines, starting with an initial run of 12 designs in blind boxes (collect ‘em all!). The statuettes of the cute little guy stand 3 inches tall, feature articulating heads and arms, and will be available starting the 10th of this month — just in time for that Devour, with any luck….

Samsung-releasing,Google-branded Android phones

…According to man-about-town, Robert X. Cringely, Samsung is readying not one, but two separate Android-based phones, one of which is due in September, with another model following around Christmas. If you believe what you read (and what his tipster says), these phones will not be labeled Samsung, rather they will be released as Google-branded gPhones. The model released in the Fall will be a “higher-end” model which apparently looks “somewhat like a Blackberry Pearl” but with a screen that flips and “a keyboard for texting” (though to be honest, that description makes little sense, as the Pearl has a keyboard). The second device will be a cheaper model (under $100), and will likely be released after the holidays. Of course, right now this is just speculation — given the large gap of time between now and September, these plans could be completely rearranged or nixed altogether… even if they are…
