How To Be an Android Power User!

Everything you need to know to master Google’s smartphone OS

…s popular SenseUI custom Android skin. Swype offers a unique and original text input interface that greatly improves texting speed. Installing a custom keyboard is not entirely straightforward, though. You will need to both enable the keyboard in the Keyboard and Language section of your phone’s settings, as well as long press on a text box and select the new input method.
Use Identifiable Ringtones and Notifications
In four simple steps, you can set up a different custom alarm to wake you on each day.
Like all modern mobile phones, the Android platform lets you select and create your own ringtones. Creating ringtones and notifications can be done manually or with the help of an app from the Android Market. Manually adding a ringtone to your phone involves creating several specific directories on your SD card, based on the type of ringtone you’d like to add. The other method is far easier. Simply download the Ringdroid app free from the Android Market and use it to edit and trim your audio files before…

iOS vs Android | TheTechJournal.com

Google’s release of Android OS 2.2 Froyo also fueled competitive heat directed at iPhone, although Apple continued selling a record number of iPhones in the first calendar quarter of 2010, and largely focused attention on the new iPad in the second quarter. With Apple now gearing up for the launch of iPhone 4.

…of all impressions.

Apple has been on a tear over the last decade in introducing products that competitors (including much larger, more experienced, and formerly entrenched companies) haven’t been able to match. For nearly ten years of iPod introductions, Apple continually grew with little effective competition from Sony and Microsoft, largely creating the market for hard drive based MP3 players and subsequently taking over the flash memory MP3 player market before releasing the iPod touch, which has no real competition from anyone. The iPhone and iPad have followed similar trajectories, facing a series of ineffectual killers that didn’t even make a dent in Apple’s recession-busting sales records.
One difficulty in making comparison between Apple’s smartphone and alternatives running Android is that they’re not the same thing. One can compare iPhone hardware features against an Android model, for example, but the value of iPhone 4 isn’t just its hardware, it’s the integration of its hardware paired with the…

Are Professional Mobile Developers In Danger Of Extinction?

The mobile market is hot, with Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android vying for market share. Each of these markets like to brag about something they share in common – the apps available on each platform. The market is so competitive that some of the players aren’t content to attract devs on the strength of their market and available SDK tools alone.

…s role is to create the user experience. And like the teacher, the developer has to take the information and make it interesting and stimulating to the user. By keeping abreast of the latest SDK changes on presentable interfaces, the developer knows what is available to make the experience pleasurable and practical for the end user.
Without the developer being present, the subject matter expert would no doubt be happy with presenting their wealth of information to the user in the most convenient way they could find. After all, they have buses to drive and nuclear plants to manage. You should not expect the average empowered user to go beyond what a generic tool gives them to create an app.
Beyond the mechanics of the app, you should probably expect a subject matter expert to speak in subject matter terms. For example, the nuclear power manager may use a lot of terms that would all but alienate the casual user wanting to learn more about a nuclear plant by downloading an app. So, is there no way that a…

Linux Phones To Dominate Mobile Market — Linux Phones

Google’s Android and Chrome OS, Intel-Nokia’s MeeGo and Palm’s webOS are among the Linux-based operating systems that will run 62% of non-smartphones by 2015, according to ABI Research.

…Their final consumer offerings, of course, are differentiated by the providers individual application and OS environments including Google’s Android platform and Chrome OS, Intel-Nokia’s MeeGo and Palm’s webOS.

Conspicuous by its absence is Apple’s iPhone and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS which use their own proprietary operating systems.

The lineup of Linux-based phones includes several from the LiMo Foundation, which to date hasn’t made a major impact in the market. However, more LiMo handsets are likely to appear in accelerating numbers as more and more members introduce their phones. The LiMo foundation offers a modular platform that is plug-in-based and hardware-independent while built around Linux software. The food chain ranges all the way from chipsets to third-party software developers.

ABI Research noted that it has prepared a separate report on smartphones using Linux.

Virtualization and cloud computing have taken over the mantle of hottest technology that only a few years ago was held…

Google launching DIY Android app tool

It appears that very soon you will not need to be a software developer to make a Google Android app. They claim you can “build just about any app you can imagine with App Inventor”, it requires no programming knowledge as you design the screen?

…I’ll have to disagree with you there. This could pave the way to useful apps, and because the coding is already done (and correctly) the apps should run smoothly. There is a massive amount of rubbish in the marketplace agreed.
I also hope that this app can encourage young people to develop software for real….

Android 2.2 comes to the T-Mobile G1

…Early adopters of the T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream/Magic) can now have the first fully-functioning build of CyanogenMod 6, which is based on Google’s Froyo (Android 2.2). Cyanogen’s rooted copy of Android 2.2 seems to have nearly all the bells and whistles of the actual version with the exception of Flash 10.1. While the majority of the software works without a hitch, converters are reporting errors when attempting to access the Android Marketplace from their phones. In addition, the rooting process can often lead to the bricking of your phone if you are not careful.
