The new sub-section of Android Market works on the web and would let phone owners buy music from the web that then lands on the phone. Since Android 2.2 can be told what to do through push notices, they never have to physically sync to get new purchases, Google said.Very few details were given about the service itself, including whether it’s entirely Google’s own, an aggregator or relying on an outside…

Google: We created Android to stop an Apple-dominated future

Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote. The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform.

…Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote. The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform. Gundotra didn’t mention Jobs by name but left little mystery that he was being blamed for creating a dystopic mobile environment not unlike the “1984″ Apple once criticized.”If we did not act, we faced a draconian future where one man, one phone, one carrier was the future,” he said. “That’s a future we don’t want.”…

Android may have private APIs like iPhone

Google’s recently hired Android Developer Advocate Tim Bray stirred controversy today in a warning to developers that suggests Android has private APIs.

…That’s the way platforms work. You have private APIs that are tested, checked over, and then modified, retested, and then released to the public.

It’s why you’re suppose to list only SUPPORTED APIs. It’s why classes can declare PRIVATE members.

Stating that you can use any API, but not guaranteeing stability is going to piss off Android users. Too many applications will break whenever the OS is upgraded, and quite a few of those will be unfixable. That’s what happens when you allow developers to use private APIs….

Google exec sees Android overtaking BlackBerry, iPhone | Ele

Android will inevitably get larger than the BlackBerry or iPhone, Google’s engineering VP Andy Rubin argued today in a bold statement. He saw it as “just a matter of time” since the open nature of Android meant it could be used by multiple phone makers and multiple devices where the in-house Apple and RIM platforms are limited by their nature.

…RIM has a no-contract phone out, Android not only has that, but because of its open nature .i.e. you can copy it without paying a license, its going to go on some of the very cheapest phones out there.

Why that is important, is right now, Smartphones and the premium market are synonymous…in this marketplace Apple can thrive.

But everyone knows smartphones are going downmarket…feature phones are being replaces…when all phones are smartphones, even the prepay $30 phone you get at Dollar General or 7-eleven….those are markets Apple won’t enter (most likely, maybe they will, but their history suggests they won’t).

It’s all about definitions…Apple will continue to own the same high end market they own now. But when we stop this artificial divide, not counting feature phones because they aren’t ’smart’…and we look at all phones, we see Apple hasn’t moved down market at all.

So in a world where all phones are smartphones, apple won’t be the biggest player…it is quite possibly going to be…

Google drops Nexus One for Verizon, points to Incredible

Google has quietly altered its Nexus One page to drop any mention of a Nexus One for Verizon. Despite what was promised in January, Google now points Verizon subscribers to the Droid Incredible and calls it a “similarly feature-packed cousin” to the Android flagship.

…Google has quietly altered its Nexus One page to drop any mention of a Nexus One for Verizon. Despite what was promised in January, Google now points Verizon subscribers to the Droid Incredible and calls it a “similarly feature-packed cousin” to the Android flagship. No official reason has been given for the change of policy. It’s unclear whether Google or Verizon prompted the move, although Verizon may prefer the sales strategy for the Incredible: it can be sold subsidized and at retail, with custom software if it chooses. The Nexus One normally has to be sold through Google alone and uses a completely reference version of Android versus HTC’s Sense UI-enabled front end….

New Android teammate: iPhone a "Disney-fied walled garden"

XML co-creator Tim Bray on Monday said he has joined Google as a Developer Advocate for Android. He joined the company because of its open-source roots but also to fight Apple, whose App Store he said was censored and limited compared to Android Market.

…HTML 5 became the panacea for every issue the internet has ever had?

so Apple releases an SDK and starts an App store. They limit the App store because they don’t want Apps that will break the primary function of the phone

I’m sorry, dude, but you’ve got to stop just believing everything you hear Steve Jobs says. They didn’t do this to protect the phone from breaking, they did this so they can have total control over what goes on the phone. Just like Nintendo and MS control what goes on the Wii and xBox. But at least they don’t try to pretend they do it for some grandiose reason.

Oh, and someone last week said right here that Apple never claims the primary purpose of the iPhone is to be a phone. You all need to get your stories straight.

and they don’t want the liability if some kid downloads an inappropriate app and their parents get mad about it.

Excuse me, but the AppStore not only does not somehow stop their liability, it actually enforces it. If the AppStore is the only way to get an app, and…

The Top 10 Google Android Apps

10 apps that add features, fun, and/or power to the G1. All of these programs are free; paid programs will debut next year.

…you shoot colored bubbles at a string of bubbles wending their way across the screen, trying to create strings of three or more bubbles to pop. Varying backgrounds, a soothing soundtrack, and various power-ups and levels of difficulty give this game a classic casual-gaming appeal, and its production values are definitely higher than some of the other games in the Market right now. This is my top choice for commute diversion.

imeem
The G1’s media player isn’t great. But imeem brings a wide collection of customized, streaming radio stations with a focus on recent popular music to the phone. Music sounds clear, and you can create customized stations around your favorite artists, Pandora-style. imeem also has an extensive social component through its Web site, but you don’t have to participate to listen to and discover new music. Conveniently, the player will run in the background when you’re in other applications. It works brilliantly over Wi-Fi, well over 3G, and poorly over EDGE.
