…Google as part of its Android 2.2 rollout surprised conference goers by revealing that its new OS would have a music store. The new sub-section of Android Market works on the web and would let phone owners buy music from the web that then lands on the phone. Since Android 2.2 can be told what to do through push notices, they never have to physically sync to get new purchases, Google said.Very few details were given about the service itself, including whether it’s entirely Google’s own, an aggregator or relying on an outside…

Google: We created Android to stop an Apple-dominated future

Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote. The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform.

…Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote. The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform. Gundotra didn’t mention Jobs by name but left little mystery that he was being blamed for creating a dystopic mobile environment not unlike the “1984″ Apple once criticized.”If we did not act, we faced a draconian future where one man, one phone, one carrier was the future,” he said. “That’s a future we don’t want.”…

Google to push Adobe Flash with Android 2.2 update | Electro

Flash on Android 2.2

…Google will heavily promote Flash when users upgrade to Android 2.2, some phone owners have discovered early. Adobe-made pages for both the Droid and Nexus One already exist that will load after the update and suggest a range of sites that will work using Flash 10.1 for Android. The samples on offer vary from video sites like the BBC and Sony Pictures to gaming like Kongregate and South Park Studios. The intro pages hint strongly that Flash 10.1 will be preinstalled with Android 2.2 rather than simply an optional install and reflect Google’s plans to…

Verizon working with Google on iPad rival

Verizon chief Lowell McAdam today said in an interview that his company is working with Google on a tablet. Speaking in a WSJ interview, the executive said tablets were part of the “next big wave of opportunities” and that Google played a key part. He didn’t say if the tablet would use Android or Chrome OS but did claim that Verizon was doing its b

…ain’t happening unless the ipad goes LTE. and even then not until Verizon has a decent network. cause Apple is as likely to put CDMA in the ipad as they are the iphone which seems to be not.

Also I welcome Verizon’s attempts to make an ‘ipad killer’. not cause i think they can.but the presence of several attempts naturalizes any monopoly that Apple might gain and holds back antitrust issues in many respects….

Android G2 Hands On: Close to Perfection

HTC and Google are getting closer to perfection with the new Android G2, the HTC Magic. Nice finish, great form factor. Check out our video, including the obligatory comparison with Apple’s iPhone, and hands-on impressions…

…The bad news first: Apart from my gripes about the user interface which are still there there is one but. A big BUT, bigger than Ramona’s, the planetary lady with accidental moustache who serves the bocadillos down at one of the fair’s restaurants: The software keyboard. On this first touch, the keyboard felt cramped, probably a result of the screen size, which is smaller than the iPhone’s which is the obvious soft keyboard reference, since it was the first one to implement a finger-touch software keyboard.

In addition to that, there’s an additional user interface problem, this time having to do with perception: Instead of popping up above your finger like in the iPhone so you can clearly see what you pressed the keys appear on the sides. They flash quickly as you press them, and I found it extremely distracting. They said that they put them on the sides not to obstruct the view, but knowing the over-the-key implementation in the iPhone’s software keyboard, it doesn’t make much sense. Furthermore, when you…

Jobs: Google’s "Don’t Be Evil" motto is "bullsh*t"

Steve Jobs discuss Google at the town hall in Apple and criticise Google on Android, deliberately willing to kill the iPhone and Adobe for being lazy with Flash.

…t” and that the new rival is fully intent on killing the iPhone with Android despite the companies’ partnership on iPhone services. He similarly pointed out that the aggression was largely one-sided and that Apple hadn’t entered search.Notably, the attendee also mentioned to Wired that Jobs called Adobe “lazy” and confirmed the commonly held belief that Apple refuses to offer Flash for the iPhone due to stability. Since Flash is the single most common source of crashes for Safari and even the Mac as a whole, it would likely fare poorly on handhelds as well, he said. Jobs, like some critics, believes many sites will move away from Flash and towards HTML5, which supports direct video streaming without a plugin….

Engadget editorial: Google’s multitouch dilemma

“Google prides itself on transparency and openness, and a secret deal forbidding Android from having pinch-to-zoom flies in the face of that culture.”

…As anyone who’s seen the last Engadget Show knows, we were incredibly lucky to have Google’s Erick Tseng as our guest. Erick is product manager of Android at Google, and he’s one of the sharpest, brightest, funniest guys around — it was great having him on the show, and I sincerely hope we see a lot more of him as time goes by. It’s obvious that Android is in capable hands.

Of course, the problem with having someone as funny, sharp, and bright as Erick on the show is that they tend to come in extremely well-prepared, and Erick was no exception — he’d read the many comments where you all asked for solid answers regarding the state of multitouch gestures on Android, and he had his answers ready and polished to a high shine. Like we’ve been hearing for months now, Erick told us that Android now supports the recognition of multiple touch inputs — the basic definition of “multitouch” — and that the real issue is actually how multitouch is implemented. It was a fascinating exchange that I encourage you to…
