…”Android 3.0, releasing in mid-oct, will need at least 1GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, a display with 1280×760 resolution”. This recent news has created a lot of buzz among Android fans. If you see carefully, hardly any phones today meet such specs. So, is Google going to alienate most of the Eclair/Froyo running phones? Actually not. In a tweet, Dan Morrill, Android opensource and compatibility Tech lead, declared that the news is made up.
This news first surfaced in a Russian podcast, Digestiv, where Mobile-review’s Eldar Murtazin told about these Gingerbread updates. Although its not even sure that its Android 3.0 which is said to be released in October this year. Its just an upcoming release, who knows, it could be Android 2.3 or something else. There is no official announcement as of now.

This tweet refers to an unwiredview article whose writer gave the updates after translating the Podcast. Eldar kept saying ‘Android Three’ which was later clarified by him in a tweet saying that he’s not sure about the…

Fragmentation is Dying - Android 2.1 runs on 50% of Devices

The efforts of Google to slow down the Fragmentation seems to be working now. A recent report shows that Android 2.1 a.k.a. Eclair leads the market with more than 50% of share.

…The best thing about this report is that the leader is the latest Android - Eclair, ofcourse don’t expect Froyo to lead, its hardly a month since its release. Although we are still looking at three versions governing the Android active user market, just compare them with the previous data result, the figures have changed significantly.
After the release of Android 2.1, Google took nearly 5 months for the next release, with the basic aim to stop confusing Application developers. The 4 quick releases:

Android 1.6 on 15th September
Android 2.0 on 26th October
Android 2.0.1 on 3rd December
Android 2.1 in 12th January

were a big reason for Android…

The Top 15 Android Phones Available Right Now

Picking the iPhone you want is a price game, but when it comes to Android, the options are daunting. Complex took time to go through the racks and find the Top 15 Android Phones on the Market Right Now. So HTC Evo 4G, Google Nexus One, HTC Hero, HTC Droid Incredible, LG Ally.. Which one ya got?

…When the first quarter reports for mobile handsets came in this year, the numbers showed that Android had surpassed Apple’s OSX as the no. 2 mobile operating system for smartphones (RIMM/Blackberry took the no. 1 spot). This was a pretty big deal for the 2-year-old Android, and we’re sure it messed up Steve Jobs’s day pretty good. When the smoke cleared, a lot of techies were still impressed, but the world took it with a grain of salt: there is really only one iPhone, but there are walls full of Android-powered devices….

iPhone claws web share back from Android

New updates from Net Applicationstoday show that the iPhone may be overtaking Android in actual use online. Despite talk of the gap closing in April, Apple’s phone grew faster in May as it jumped from 30.3 percent the month before to 32.8 percent of the mobile web; Google has just 6.2 percent.

…Browser share and sales volumes are very different beasts. Sales volumes are very, very seasonal and are extremely misleading (Droid may be selling extremely well, while iPhone is in the down season, in anticipation of the new model).

Browser stats can be a fairly reliable indicator of the current platform market share. And while the market share indication may not be so reliable (depending on which sites are used for the data), trends will be much more reliable.

And the trends indicate that, while both iPhone and Android are growing (at the expense of Symbian and others), for every…

The new sub-section of Android Market works on the web and would let phone owners buy music from the web that then lands on the phone. Google: We created Android to stop an Apple-dominated future

Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote. The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform.

…Android was created precisely to prevent the kind of mobile future Apple is trying to make, Google said in its day 2 I/O conference keynote. The company’s Vic Gundotra said Android was necessary as, without it, too much control would be put into the hands of Steve Jobs and the iPhone platform. Gundotra didn’t mention Jobs by name but left little mystery that he was being blamed for creating a dystopic mobile environment not unlike the “1984″ Apple once criticized.”If we did not act, we faced a draconian future where one man, one phone, one carrier was the future,” he said. “That’s a future we don’t want.”…

Looks like Googles Android is making its way to platforms other than phones / smartphones - as open source, it is also seen on the new Tablet PCs, the Blue Sky BL10 is the latest one

…Looks like Google’s Android is making its way to platforms other than phones / smartphones as open source, it is also seen on the new Tablet PCs, the Blue Sky BL10 is the latest one. What makes the BL10 slightly different is that it works with a VIA processor WM8505, which is an exception to the norm (usually it is the Intel Atom or Snapdragon). The BL10 is equipped with a touch screen 10.1 1024 x 576, 256MB RAM, up to 32GB of NAND flash and a VGA camera option. The price is not known yet….

Verizon working with Google on iPad rival

Verizon chief Lowell McAdam today said in an interview that his company is working with Google on a tablet. Speaking in a WSJ interview, the executive said tablets were part of the “next big wave of opportunities” and that Google played a key part. He didn’t say if the tablet would use Android or Chrome OS but did claim that Verizon was doing its b

…ain’t happening unless the ipad goes LTE. and even then not until Verizon has a decent network. cause Apple is as likely to put CDMA in the ipad as they are the iphone which seems to be not.

Also I welcome Verizon’s attempts to make an ‘ipad killer’. not cause i think they can.but the presence of several attempts naturalizes any monopoly that Apple might gain and holds back antitrust issues in many respects….

Android may have private APIs like iPhone

Google’s recently hired Android Developer Advocate Tim Bray stirred controversy today in a warning to developers that suggests Android has private APIs.

…That’s the way platforms work. You have private APIs that are tested, checked over, and then modified, retested, and then released to the public.

It’s why you’re suppose to list only SUPPORTED APIs. It’s why classes can declare PRIVATE members.

Stating that you can use any API, but not guaranteeing stability is going to piss off Android users. Too many applications will break whenever the OS is upgraded, and quite a few of those will be unfixable. That’s what happens when you allow developers to use private APIs….
