Palm’s Matias Duarte joins Google as UI Director

We’d heard rumors this morning that webOS design guru Matias Duarte had left Palm for Google, but now we’ve got it straight from Mountain View: Mr. Duarte is the new User Experience Director for Android.

…masons well if he brings too much of the webOS over to Android, say HELLO lawsuit.. Palm VS. Android.. Just because he may have been a lead designer and had final say so doesn’t mean he can bring all of that over to Android.. But I’m sure he can help make some needed improvements and keep them seperate from Palm’s patents…..

Google Voice is now your real-time pusher (on Android)

Once upon a time, Google undercut its own infant OS by offering rival platforms some of the best features of Android. Those days are long

…mogren The advantage of the real app is the little perks that just make your life a little easier. For one, it has the ability to play back the audio message over the phone’s regular in-call speaker instead of the music speaker like it would if you were playing an mp3 in an email. If it’s taking a few minutes to transcribe the message it’ll give you the audio first and fill in the rest later. And if you want to use Google Voice for calls you can set up this app to intercept outgoing calls from the standard dialer and reroute them through your Google Voice number….

Verizon’s Nexus One to be sold only through Google, have Sen

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but Android Central seems to have obtained a screen shot from a deep, dark, top-secret Verizon system

…To the people complaining about having to buy it through google.com. You do have to realize that what Google wants to do with the mobile industry is something that we’re not use to. We’re used to buying a phone through a carrier, getting tied into a contract and getting the phone cheap. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.Google is trying to get us away from subsidized pricing. I have a great family plan and it sucks that i couldn’t get the phone for cheaper than 530 but oh well. If your able to get exclusivity of phones away from carriers, what do carriers have to do? simple, better coverage and more competitive pricing….

Google and Dish Network testing TV search on Android-based s

We’ve definitely heard of a few different Android-based satellite and cable boxes in the past year, but it looks like Google’s exploring a real move

…We’ve definitely heard of a few different Android-based satellite and cable boxes in the past year, but it looks like Google’s exploring a real move into living room: the Wall Street Journal reports that El Goog and Dish Network are testing a TV search service on a new box that runs on “elements” of Android. (We’re taking that to mean it’s a stripped-down version of the OS tailored for a set-top, not some totally crazy remix.) The box features a QWERTY remote, and users can search both Dish content and other services like YouTube, which sounds like the same riff TiVo’s trying to pull off with the Premiere. Unfortunately, none of this seems destined to hit consumers anytime soon — the WSJ also says the trial “is limited to a very small number of Google employees and their families and could be discontinued at any time.” Okay, but can we at least get some hands-on pictures first?…

Google’s free turn-by-turn navigation, cardock UI to Andriod

Google today unveiled Maps Navigation (beta, of course), an extremely upgraded version of its current Maps software that’ll be free and, from what we understand, available by default on all Android 2.0 devices.

…la Sense UI.

In addition to demonstrating the basic navigational functions, Gundotra also showcased a new user interface that appears when the device hooked up into a car dock, one that is intended for use “at an arm’s length away.” Essentially, it means much larger iconography and a convenient “voice search” option front and center. We later got confirmation from a Google product manager that car dock detection was definitively a hardware-based feature, which we take to mean Android devices currently on the market won’t necessarily have the same convenience. If Android 2.0 takes off how Google (and Verizon!) hope it does, companies like TomTom and Garmin are going to seriously need to worry about their bottom line. Watch Gundotra demonstrate the app after the break.

Update: Navigation for the iPhone? Gundotra said the ball’s in Apple’s court, so no telling if / when that’ll happen. Remember how well Latitude integrated?

Live coverage of Google’s Android Gphone mobile OS announcement

Google finally tells all!

…A time. Andy’s on the call now. 9:25AM PT - Q: “My question goes out to the handset manufacturers — does your involvement in OHA mean you won’t be participating in other mobile OSs?” Peter from HTC: “We actually look at this as a good opportunity to innovate… we believe this is more opportunity, we can do more… our commitment to other OSs is the same.” Zander is babbling on about being committed to open source and open platforms again. “We do have some commitments with some of our carrier partners, but we’ve been working a lot on this kind of strategy.”9:27AM PT - Andy answering our pal Om’s question: “All of this software will be available… within one week’s time… handsets will be available in the second half of 2008.”9:28AM PT - WSJ: “Where does Google take it from here? How will Google’s apps and services work with this platform? Will there be a prominent position for them on the handset?” Rubin: “One of the interesting things about Google’s business is the flexibility and relevance… part of…

Android Figurines

Google to release a series of authorized Android robot figurines, starting with an initial run of 12 designs in blind boxes (collect ‘em all!).

…Physically expressing the love that you feel for your Android-powered device can be difficult — hugging and caressing the phone gets old after a while, truth be told. Good news, though: artist Andrew Bell has teamed up with Google to release a series of authorized Android robot figurines, starting with an initial run of 12 designs in blind boxes (collect ‘em all!). The statuettes of the cute little guy stand 3 inches tall, feature articulating heads and arms, and will be available starting the 10th of this month — just in time for that Devour, with any luck….

Giant Android eclair delivered to Google by bigger nerds

By now you should be familiar with Google’s confectionary codenames for its Google Android OS: version 1.5 (Cupcake), 1.6 (Donut), 2.0 (Eclair) and version x.x (Flan). What you probably didn’t know is that Google honors each release by dropping a steaming hot foam facsimile onto its front lawn.

…By now you should be familiar with Google’s confectionary codenames for its Google Android OS: version 1.5 (Cupcake), 1.6 (Donut), 2.0 (Eclair) and version x.x (Flan). What you probably didn’t know is that Google honors each release by dropping a steaming hot foam facsimile onto its front lawn. Historically, the arrival of the giant Donut at the GooglePlex was followed by the 1.6 developer release of Android just a few days later. Don’t get too excited though, last we heard Eclair wouldn’t arrive until Q2 of 2010 for consumers. Video and another view of the nerds “gone wild” just after the break….
