The dirty little secret about Google Android

While Android began with the greatest of intentions around openness and collaboration, here’s the dirty little secret that haunts Google’s mobile OS.

…T to lock them into the FCC’s open access guidelines (which Google helped form). Verizon had initially fought the open access concept with legal action, but eventually made a 180-degree turnaround and trumpeted its own plans to become an open network.
However, Verizon’s open network plans have never really materialized. To say the company is dragging its feet would be a massive understatement. The best hope for a popular, unlocked handset on Verizon was Google’s own Nexus One.
After launching in January 2010, first with access to the T-Mobile network, the Nexus One was planned to arrive on all four of the big U.S. wireless carriers by spring. The phone was sold by Google, unlocked, for roughly $500. Then users could simply buy service (without a contract) from a wireless carrier. That’s the model that has worked so well for consumers in Europe and the Nexus One was supposed to be Google’s major initiative to start moving the U.S. in the same direction.
Unfortunately, sales of the Nexus One were tepid and…

Revealed: Android Honeycomb next up from Google

Google is set to call the next iteration of its mobile OS Android Honeycomb, following on from the tablet-friendly Gingerbread platform.

…3. So Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) isn’t out yet and Android 3.x (Honeycomb) is already being discussed. Isn’t it a little premature?I bet both will be used on Smartphones and Tablets. It is odd to have two Google operating systems in use on tablets but their intentions are very different. Android has internal storage, applications (that work with the same ethos as desktop apps but are obviously cut down) etc… Whereas Chrome OS has very little user accessible internal storage and it’s all about web apps (which as far as I can tell are basically just websites).Android is also a proven OS with a big market share. Chrome OS is a new way of working that maybe a success but may also flop (like Wave did, although that had next to no…

Sony Ericsson introduce Android 3.0 gaming platform and PSP

Sony Ericsson are set to introduce a brand new smart phone/gaming platform running on Android 3.0.the tech website claims to have it on good assurance that Sony Ericsson who have yet to introduce an Android 2.0 are working on an Android 3.0 gaming platform for a new, PSP Go-like smartphone. Google, developers of the Android OS.

…in other words, it’s a landscape slider with game controls in place of the typical QWERTY keyboard. The D-pad is here, but instead of the small joystick, the device will have what was described as a long touch pad for analog controls, along with standard PSP buttons and shoulder buttons. The phone has a large display, described as being between 3.7 and 4.1 inches with WVGA or better resolution, a 5 megapixel camera that we’re told might not be final, and it’ll likely have a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU on board. The phone is mostly black with some silver highlights, and the gamepad area is white / silver in color. Apparently it’s currently branded as a Xperia device, but it looks like it will carry PlayStation branding as well. Those who’ve seen the phone say it looks pretty damn sexy. The mockup above probably doesn’t do the actual hardware justice, but it should give you an idea of what you’ll be dealing with.

On the software side, it looks like the device will be running Gingerbread (Android 3.0) with a…

PlayStation Phone running Android 3, out by Oct

A flood of details about a rumored Sony Ericcson phone running Android 3 and carrying the PlayStation branding have emerged. While still unconfirmed, the information makes sense for both Sony and Google.

…The device is said to resemble a PSP Go, or a phone that opens in landscape mode to reveal gaming controls instead of a physical keyboard. There is a directional pad, a touch area for analog controls, and standard face and shoulder buttons. “The phone has a large display, described as being between 3.7 and 4.1 inches with WVGA or better resolution, a 5 megapixel camera that we’re told might not be final, and it’ll likely have a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU on board,” Engadget says.

The phone is said to be running Gingerbread with a custom, phone-specific skin, and will be able to play a variety of classic PlayStation and PlayStation Portable games digitally. It makes sense, in a way: this would give Sony another way to monetize its existing portable gaming content, and Google’s mobile platform would get a powerful portable gaming boost. Apple is known for its iPhone games, but thus far the Android platform has not enjoyed the same level of support for gaming.

Engadget speculates the phone could be released as early…

Chrome to Phone now available in Android Market

Chrome to Phone isn’t a new product — we’ve been using it since May, in fact –but Google’s second mobile announcement today (behind Voice Actions)

…Chrome to Phone isn’t a new product — we’ve been using it since May, in fact — but Google’s second mobile announcement today (behind Voice Actions) is that its continuous client app is now “official” and available to all users (with Android 2.2 Froyo) via Android Market. As it was before, websites can be pushed from the Chrome browser to your Android device, with certain apps (Maps, YouTube) taking over for the browser when contextually appropriate. Additionally, the code is open, which we’re hoping means this Chrome extension will find its way to other browsers. The team is “looking into” bringing the capabilities to other mobile OSs (the iPhone was specifically asked), but don’t get your hopes up: nothing’s been submitted, and we didn’t get the feeling it was an active push. Incredibly useful? Yes, yes indeed….

PlayStation gaming is coming to Android 3.0!

It seems that Sony Ericsson — a company that has yet to even introduce a Android 2.0 device — is at work on a project to redefine gaming on Google’s mobile platform.

…There’s no question that gaming on the Android platform has heretofore been relatively underwhelming, but that looks like it’s all about to change. It seems that Sony Ericsson — a company that has yet to even introduce an Android 2.0 device — is at work on a project to redefine gaming on Google’s mobile platform. We now know (via a trusted source) that the company is actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which are already in the late stages of planning. And we’ve got the goods on it.

Here’s what we can tell you about the hardware: if you’re a gaming fan, this is exactly the kind of phone you’ve been waiting for. The device is described as cross between the Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go — in other words, it’s a landscape slider with game controls in place of the typical QWERTY keyboard. The D-pad is here, but instead of the small joystick, the device will have what was described as a “long touch pad” for analog controls, along…

First Virus for Android has arrived

Although one could parse words and debate whether this is exactly analogous to the Trojan horse, it is darn close. A trojan in computer parlance, as you probably know, is a reference to the Trojan horse, filled with Greeks waiting to attack the city of Troy although it appeared to be a harmless wood sculpture. These apps are in the same spirit, just as the Trojans willingly allowed the hidden Greeks into their city walls, these apps act similiarly and get people to willingly accept what they think will be benign access inside their phone’s security framework. They appear harmless even though they are not. Informing a user that SMS access is going to be allowed is not the same as informing them that the app will regularly be making random $6 SMS’s without their consent. The $6…

NASA Launches Google Phones Into Space as Cheap Satellites

What happens when NASA geeks hangout with Google employees? Well, they duct tape their Android-based phone to a space rocket and blast it 28,000 feet into the air. Duh!

…”Today’s satellites are the size of Greyhound buses,” Atchison told Wired. “But I believe they are going to get smaller and more frequently deployed. This is a first-step effort.”

It is worth noting that 90-percent of the NexusOne’s weight is due to the screen and the battery. If mobile phone components are used for satellite technology, these would not be included. The weight comparison alone would be a huge fuel savings. And it is no secret that NASA is definitely coupon-clipping these days.

Mobile phone-sized satellites would definitely produce a lot less space junk then their current counterparts. But this also means any hobbyists with a few thousand bucks could deploy a satellite. However, if NASA is successful with converting mobile phones into satellites, it will be an interesting spin on “there’s an app for that.”

I welcome the iSatellite! Just don’t hold it wrong.
