The Google Effect: Vlingo Now Free In The Android Market

Vlingo, developer of a popular Voice command application for a wide variety of mobile platforms, responded to Google’s new Voice Actions application by offering its Android application for free.

…Vlingo is also available on other platforms such as the iPhone and the BlackBerry and, most importantly, on multiple versions of Android. As attractive as Google’s Voice Actions for Android may be, it is only available for Android 2.2 users. So Android users, what do you think? Will you use Vlingo over Voice Actions for Android now that Vlingo is free?…

Oracle sues Google over Java patent infringement in Android

The suit alleges Android violates some seven patents and contains copies of Sun’s original Java code — a damning accusation given that Google CEO Eric Schmidt once led the Java team before leaving Sun and eventually arriving in Mountain View. Oracle says Google’s known about these issues for around five years now.

…JonnyB My thoughts is Google’s Android OS is not only violating other companies patents, but also user’s privacy. If you look at Android specification, Google can install or uninstall apps remotely on any Android device secretly on the background. For this they use SSL connection over a Google Talk similar protocol. This violates the privacy of a user. Imagine Google installs Latitude on your Android phone or tablet, and by knowing your geographic location they can send your information to other companies, governments or secret agencies. What is worst, if someday Google Talk severs are compromised by a terrorist organization, they could have full control of your system and know where you live. I’ll hope for the good of humanity, Google removes this feature from Android, and it stops violationg other companies patents like Oracle’s Java….

Chrome to Phone now available in Android Market

Chrome to Phone isn’t a new product — we’ve been using it since May, in fact –but Google’s second mobile announcement today (behind Voice Actions)

…Chrome to Phone isn’t a new product — we’ve been using it since May, in fact — but Google’s second mobile announcement today (behind Voice Actions) is that its continuous client app is now “official” and available to all users (with Android 2.2 Froyo) via Android Market. As it was before, websites can be pushed from the Chrome browser to your Android device, with certain apps (Maps, YouTube) taking over for the browser when contextually appropriate. Additionally, the code is open, which we’re hoping means this Chrome extension will find its way to other browsers. The team is “looking into” bringing the capabilities to other mobile OSs (the iPhone was specifically asked), but don’t get your hopes up: nothing’s been submitted, and we didn’t get the feeling it was an active push. Incredibly useful? Yes, yes indeed….

iPhone Looses to Android in First half of 2010

Nothing lasts forever! And who knows that better than our tech giants battling to edge out their rivals. While Apple iPhone had long been enjoying the lead in the smartphone market, it now seems to have lost its hold against the mounting popularity of Google’s open mobile platform Android.

Canalys: Android takes Q2 smartphone market share lead in US

We knew Android phones were selling like gangbusters — Google has been none too shy in telling us as much — but numbers were slightly less clear in a larger context.

…We knew Android phones were selling like gangbusters — Google has been none too shy in telling us as much — but numbers were slightly less clear in a larger context. Well, if a new report by Canalys is to be believed, those numbers are just fine in a larger context. Canalys claims that in Q2 Android was up a whopping 886 percent over last year’s sales during this time period (remember, the original Droid didn’t come out until November), and those wild sales put it at 34 percent of the US market, compared to RIM’s 32 percent and Apple’s 21.7 share. Of course, RIM has a big launch on the way, and we’re not sure how much of the iPhone 4’s heady run this report captures, so things could naturally look different for Q3. Also, it’s worth noting that the breakdown of phones actually in use is of course dramatically different. Still, nobody is doing that bad: the smartphone market is up 64 percent year-over-year, and Apple and RIM grew 61 percent and 41 percent, respectively. Oh, and remember Nokia? Yeah, they’re…

Larry Page Calls Steve Jobs A Liar

Steve Jobs saying he was surprised by Android : Google founder Larry Page says Steve Jobs is rewriting history. Larry Page was responding to Steve Jobs assertion during D8 that he just woke up one day and suddenly Google was making a smartphone. He was also responding to allegations from Steve Jobs that Google ruined the companies relationship

…Google founder Larry Page says Steve Jobs is “rewriting history” when it comes to the iPhone-Android rivalry.
Speaking with reporters at Sun Valley, Larry Page said:
“We had been working on Android a very long time, with the notion of producing phones that are Internet enabled and have good browsers and all that because that did not exist in the marketplace…I think that characterization of us entering after is not really reasonable.”
Larry Page was responding to Steve Jobs’ assertion during D8 that he just woke up one day and suddenly Google was making a smartphone. He was also responding to allegations from Steve Jobs that Google ruined the companies’ relationship by getting into the smartphone business.
(As if Apple is the only company that should be allowed to make a smartphone.)

Linux is going mainstream

The truth is that Linux is well on it’s way to being a mainstream operating system. The bad news is that this will not happen the way many of us envisioned. Company that will have the biggest share in this could very well be Google with their Android and Chrome OS.

…company that will have the biggest share in this could very well be Google with their Android and Chrome OS. So we should all be happy about this. We wanted Linux to become very popular. Yet, there is something annoying about a company that is already so massive being the one to take Linux to the next step. On the plus side Ubuntu has a bright future ahead of it and may also gain much of the market share, but this may not happen before Google dominates the markets first.
As awesome as Linux is on the desktop many will use Linux first on their Phone. Most of them will not know that they are running Linux, which is also a bit of a let down. On the positive side the smart phone market is projected to have a market worth of 150.3 Billion dollars by 2014, that is a lot of revenue being generated by companies dealing in Linux based smart phones. So once Linux via Droid and or Chrome dominates the Mobile market and people including open source critics learn they are using Linux, what will happen next? Will Google…
