Motorola Launches Milestone XT720 Phone With Android 2.1

Claimed the world’s slimmest 8MP Android smartphone and the first-ever to have a Xenon flash, the Milestone is shipping with Android 2.1 on board, with a 3.7″ WVGA display, 720p camcorder mode, the full Google suite of apps, an 8GB microSD card, and an HDMI output.

…It’s the world’s slimmest 8MP Android smartphone and the first-ever to
have a Xenon flash. Android 2.1 is loaded on, and while that’s the
latest version, it’s hard to swallow with Android 2.2 being announced
last month at Google I/O. Other specifications include a 3.7″ WVGA
display, a 720p camcorder mode, the full Google suite of apps, an 8GB
microSD card, and an HDMI output. It uses a 550MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, so
it’s not quite as powerful as the Snagdragon-based alternatives. But it
seems that this phone is aimed at the mid-range crowd rather than the
high-end buyers, so we guess that makes sense….

The BL10 is equipped with a touch screen 10.1 1024 x 576, 256MB RAM, up to 32GB of NAND flash and a VGA camera option. The price is not known yet….

Google adds iPhone, Android, Palm Pre access to AdWords

Google has revamped AdWords to support iPhone, Android and Palm Pre smartphone users.

…re out and about. The AdWords program includes local, national and international distribution. Google’s text advertisements are short, consisting of one title line and two content text lines. Image ads can be one of several different Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) standard sizes. The ads can point to desktop landing pages so advertisers don’t need to create mobile landing pages or ads in mobile formats. The optimized Google ads, like its standard mobile ads, include the delivery of mobile-specific calls-to-action and reaching mobile consumers that are searching with their phones.Advertisers are able to display ads exclusively on these mobile devices, create campaigns for them and get separate performance reporting. If advertisers prefer not to show their desktop ads on these phones, they can opt out and show ads only on desktop and laptop…

Google search has 4 out of 5 senses if you are on Android

Google search has 4 out of 5 senses if you are on Android

…You can touch, you can see, you can hear when you are searching Google on Android phones. Human beings are said to have 5 senses including touch, see, hear, smell and taste and then some of them have a sixth sense too.

Android phones can search based on what they see through their camera, what they hear from their microphone and what do they feel when the user touches them on the touchscreen. To see all these three in action, grab a Google Android phone and start using Google Search for mobile on that.

I’ve already discussed how Google search responds to the two senses i.e “hear” and “see” in my earlier article “Google gives eyes and ears to mobile”. Today I will also mention the sense of touch. All android touchscreens are quite brilliant and here is an application that gives the sense of touch to the android phones.

Google Gestures allows you to search using the written gestures. The app comes from Google labs and is available for Google Android platform only. Here is the official announcement of the…

Google, Dish Network Reportedly Test Android-Based Satellite

Google has set reportedly its sights on the television set-top box with a small test in conjunction with Dish Network that adds Google’s Android operating

…Google has set reportedly its sights on the television set-top box with a small test in conjunction with Dish Network that adds Google’s Android operating system to the satellite television experience. Viewers search satellite programming alongside websites such as Google’s YouTube with a keyboard and watch videos from either source on their televisions, reports the Wall Street Journal (subscription required).
Google’s trying to replicate the internet experience on TV, said WSJ’s Jessica Vascallero, but it’s early days, and they’re testing a lot of formats. She claims a small group of Google employees is currently kicking the tires on the service, but that Google nor Dish Network would comment about the test.
Google dominates online search, and is apparently eager to extend its reach to the other main screen in most homes. When people search for television programs and web video content on these boxes, they would encounter Google’s keyword and display ads, giving the search and advertising giant another…

Microsoft Launches "TAG" Application for Google Android Phon

A new application for Google Android Phones! Called Tag, the free software uses a handset’s camera to turn it into a mobile barcode reader.

…) They are in habit of developing softwares for their rival Google’s products. This time around Microsoft has come up a new application for Google Android Phones!Called Tag, the free software uses a handset’s camera to turn it into a mobile barcode reader. It is the first application Microsoft has made for the Android operating system - one of the key rivals to Windows Mobile. Android is among the last to get the Tag application which is available on Windows phones, the iPhone, Blackberry and Symbian handsets. Using Tag and similar programs, barcodes can become coupons that link people to websites, pass on information or give visitors a discount in an online store. Releasing the application for Android continues Microsoft’s program of making software for rival phone firm. In December 2008 it produced its first iPhone app, called Seadragon, and followed it up in early 2009 by releasing Tag for the Apple handset. Apple has the most mature mobile apps store. In early January, Apple said more than three billion…

Android and T-Mobile G1’s Five Most Obnoxious Flaws

While I was more impressed by the T-Mobile G1 than I thought I’d be, the list of catches for Android and the phone are quickly piling up—some that might very well be dealbreakers. Topping the list, it’s tightly integrated with your Google account—so tightly that you can only use one Google account with the phone .

…A Googler told us the workaround they’ve been employing is using a separate IMAP mail app for their secondary Gmail accounts, but that still screws you if you’ve got calendars on multiple Google accounts like if you’ve got a hosted Google Apps account for your site and a personal one, you’ve gotta pick one or the other. This is a technical limitation of Android 1.0, so it should be fixed in the future, but for now, as someone with a work account and a personal one, it definitely stings.
Contacts and Syncing: As mentioned, there is no desktop syncing app. It’s all about the cloud your Google contacts and cal are considered the masters. So if it’s all on your desktop or god forbird, MobileMe, you’ve gotta move it over to your Google account. At launch, however it’ll be able to do remote syncing, so if you make a change or download an app on your desktop, your device will automatically sync up. Still, it’ll be open for developers to fill this market, as well as the lack of Exchange support. Whether this is a…

Android netbooks on their way, likely by 2010

…The image above shows a netbook Asus EEEPC 1000H running on Google’s mobile operating system Android. Huh? You thought Android was for mobile phones, right? Well, as we’ve written before, Google is planning to use Android for any device not just the mobile phones.
Besides writing as freelancers for VentureBeat, we also run a startup called Mobile-facts. It took us about four hours of work to compile Android for the netbook. Having done so, we (Daniel Hartmann, that is) got the netbook fully up and running on it, with nearly all of the necessary hardware you’d want (including graphics, sound and the wireless card for internet) running. See the images below for further impressions.
Here’s the significance: Imagine the billion dollar market at stake here if Google can make good on this vision. Netbooks are basically small-scale PCs. For Silicon Valley myriad of software companies, it means a well-backed, open operating system that is open and ripe for exploitation for building upon. Now think of Chrome,…

…already enjoying it. It’s not better than the iPhone but certainly at par with it in terms of features and capability. And just like when got my iPhone I immediately look around for great apps to download.
To help you decide which Nexus One apps to install on your brand new unit, here are my top ten Android Apps so far.

What is a smartphone without a Twitter app? While there are several of them available at the Android Market, Twidroid is possibly the best. It’s robust, fast and has all nice eye-candy that you would look for in a smartphone app for Twitter. Twidroid is a full-featured Twitter app for Nexus One and other Android smartphones. Some of its features include postings, mentions and DMs, view user profiles, follow/unfollow, native retweet option, threaded view for DM and more. It’s available as a free and paid premium versions. The paid premium version cost $4.95 but gives you Lists, multi-account suport, bit.ly and some other advanced features.
