Google unveils Froya for Android 2.2

Google seems set to announce the next version of their Android operating system, deliciously dubbed Froyo (frozen yogurt) at the Google IO conference today.

…The exciting and terrifying thing about Google is that you never know what they re going to do (and give away free) next. Last time it was Navigation, and TomTom is likely still reeling. This time it could be free cell service for everyone in Rhode Island. Who knows?! My official prediction is up as part of the Android Central Round Table. They ve also got a ton of coverage from yesterday, which included the announcement of the VP8 video codec being released open source and freely licensed as part of their WebM initiative (which includes the MKV container and Ogg Vorbis audio codec), a Chrome Web Store, Adobe s HTML5 exporter for Dreamweaver, Google s foray into the 10 TV experience with Clicker.tv, and more. Here are some more highlights, but join Phil and crew for all the live fun and we ll be back with our thoughts later:…

HTC Google Nexus

There are around 50 smartphones and tablets running Android today. Thats right, out of all the offspring they fathered with the Open Handset Alliance,

…s only the second AMOLED display to find on an Android handset. D1 video is sure to sweeten the deal too, and perhaps so will the Live Wallpapers.
Awash in rumors well before launch, the Google Nexus One was officially revealed in January 2010 and it became available right after the unveiling event. Of course, the first units were to sell only in a very limited number of countries (UK, Singapore and Hong Kong).
Anyway Google are to start shipping their Nexus One through various carriers across Europe, starting with Vodafone this spring….

…Apple’s new iPad could have a beneficial, unintended effect on Apple’s mobile war with Google: It could delay or diminish some iPhone developers’ interest in making apps for Google’s Android platform.

As Apple’s iPhone platform matures, many developers have considered expanding their apps to Android, which is experiencing a growth spurt these days. Indeed, Android added more than 9,000 new apps in March — very impressive.

But for some of those developers, Apple’s iPad has provided a distraction. If this distraction continues — and if the iPad becomes a hugely successful platform — it could keep those developers focused on Apple’s products, and could cause some of them to postpone or reduce their plans to make Android apps.

For example, we spoke to a successful iPhone game developer yesterday, who has considered porting his games to Android for several months. But so far, he has released nothing for Google’s platform.

Yet his company rushed an iPad app for launch day, and has already had some success…

Google Updates Maps (Land And Sky) | Android Messages

Google has been busy in the apps department lately, launching both Orkut and Buzz applications to Android Market. But it isn’t only new apps that

…devices, adding a few neat features. In addition to a Latitude widget and reworked search results, Google now allows you to use a Google Map as one of your Live Wallpapers. You can even have it track your current location using GPS/aGPS and show live traffic data, right there on your homescreen. Of course that sounds like a battery killer but hey whatever you want!
Another huge addition is support for multiple accounts, so if you’ve got a personal and a work email account for instance, you can get the information you’re looking for on either depending on your situation.
And about that other map they updated? We’re talking about Google SkyMap an application that I absolutely love as a fun, cool, geeky app to use at random moments. Not a huge update mainly adding support for different phones but just wanted to remind you to download it and try it if you haven’t already!
Oh yeah FYI Google also updated Gesture Search so its now available on older versions of Android. Man they’re working hard over there!…

…Google’s been iterating its Maps client for Android devices at a positively ridiculous pace lately, burning through versions 3.4 and 4.0 in a span of just a few days last month — but hey, March is upon us, which apparently means it’s time for another fresh cut. This time around we’re looking at 4.1, though the mere 0.1 bump in the version number really doesn’t do this thing justice — they’ve redesigned the results screen, added a swipe gesture for moving between results, served up a new Latitude widget for the home screen, and brought in support for multiple Google accounts (for seeing different Buzz follows, for instance). The icing on the cake, though, is a new live wallpaper for Android 2.1 phones that’s a live map of your location, which sounds absurdly awesome — assuming it doesn’t beat your battery to a bloody pulp with constant GPS access, of course. It’s available now from the good ol’ Market for devices running Android 1.6 and up, so if you’re on a device that’s still stuck on Cupcake, feel free…

[HOT] HTC Google Nexus One Complete Review

From the plethora of Android devices that have been lurking around the market lately, only a few seemed to appeal to fans of the operating system. Even though Google’s name should pretty much make sure that a device is sold in large quantities, I believe that the main attraction of Nexus One is the latest Android 2.1 OS.. Readmore..

…sistance” of the device. The smartphone has rounded shapes, which make it easier to carry in the pocket, while the teflon that covers the front and a small part of the back gives it a stylish aura.
The back cover is made from a rubber-like plastic, which enhances users’ grip of the phone. Google Nexus features a 4-set of touch-sensitive controls, which have been placed right under the touch screen. While this should’ve made control of menus much easier, I found that you need to push at least twice on any of these keys until they actually respond. The small white trackball seems to be pretty solid and can be used to scroll up/down in menus, but I found it most useful when using the browser. It also lights up every time you receive a call or SMS message, or you miss either of those. There aren’t any additional external keys on any of the sides, except the volume key on the upper left side. The power on/off button has been placed on top left, while on the right there’s a 3.5mm jack port. The power button can…
