Is Google Android coming of age?

With a slew of new devices, is it time for Google Android to take the spotlight.

…Samsung is working on its own
Android-based devices. Later this month, Motorola a mobile phone maker in
need of a big hit will launch its own Android phone. If online rumours are
to be believed, it will feature a huge 3.7in touch-screen and slide-out
keyboard, positioning itself as an alternative to, say, a BlackBerry or
Nokia smartphone.

Android, too, is starting to filter through the technology ecosystem on to
other devices. Acer is installing a version of the Android operating system
on a forthcoming range of netbooks, with Asus, another maker of diminutive
laptops, expected to follow suit later next year.

The ubiquity and power of mobile devices means that software developers and
consumer electronics manufacturers are keen to stamp their mark on this
emerging market, in much the same way as Microsoft dominated the desktop
computing space in the last decade….

RIM Must Switch To Android Now, Before It’s Too Late

RIM’s new BlackBerry 6 operating system and apps platform still isn’t in the same league as its arch rivals, Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. …RIM’s new BlackBerry 6 operating system and apps platform still isn’t in the same league as its arch rivals, Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. So it’s time for RIM to make a difficult, but important move: Stop wasting time developing its own operating system and apps platform, and switch the BlackBerry to Android. The sooner, the better, before it’s too late. As Wall Street is starting to figure out, RIM still doesn’t have a credible answer to the iPhone or Android. While RIM is still selling plenty of BlackBerry devices — thanks to international expansion and big sales at carriers — it’s not a software leader anymore. As a result, RIM is losing the high-end of the smartphone market to Google and Apple, and risks becoming a low-end, low-margin player, or worse. RIM is the new Palm, in a sense. And don’t forget what happened to Palm, even after it miraculously created a decent new OS from scratch. (The sad twist of irony is that RIM could have bought Palm and its solid new WebOS platform, before it…

That’s how many new phones running Google’s Android software are activated every day worldwide, CEO Eric Schmidt said this week. It’s double the number two months ago. The growth will help Android overtake Apple’s iPhone during the next two years, according to the research firm iSuppli. By 2012, there will be 75 million Android phones, including the popular Droid models from Motorola and HTC, iSuppli estimates. That compares with 62 million iPhones.

“We have to spend a lot of resources to make sure our content and services abide by Chinese law, and they don’t.”

Baidu CEO Robin Li, head of the leading search engine in China, on how rival Google is benefiting from avoiding the country’s censorship laws. Google stopped censoring Chinese search results in March, opting to redirect users to its unfiltered Hong Kong site. While this may provide a cost advantage, it’s hard to argue that Baidu hasn’t benefited from Google’s standoff with Chinese authorities, analysts say….

Android "Laser Focused" On User Experience For Next Release

…Google’s Android team has been pushing new versions of the operating system at a furious pace since the first Android device hit the market in 2008. Lots of features have been added over the last couple of years. But the user experience hasn’t evolved much.
That’s all going to change in the next version, we’ve heard from multiple sources close to Google.
The team more or less has the core features they want at this point, say our sources, although more tweaks are certainly coming. But Google wants to put an end to the desire of handset manufacturers and carriers to add their own UI layer on top of Google things like Sense, Motoblur, Ninjablur, etc.
Most of the time their shells aren’t all that great anyway (see HTC EVO), and they tend to slow down the device.
Google is focusing the bulk of its efforts on the user experience for the upcoming Gingerbread release to counter this. And they want to get the Android experience closer to the iPhone.
It’s unlikely that third parties will ever completely resist the…

Google Android means a smartphone in every pocket

The cutting edge of mobile phone technology is going mass market, and the search giant is set to make more money than ever before, says Matt Warman.

…but Android provides a new
means for, say, energy providers to point out that they re cheaper than your
current provider, or for your fridge to start talking directly to Tesco.com.
All this is a part of the operating system that runs smartphones.

So smart technology, from mobile phones initially, is moving out along a
range of avenues, and into a host of new demographics. That presents the
possibility of the web being more beneficial to all our lives than ever
before.

But in fact it s a commercial imperative that is rolling the web s reach
across boundaries: the more people who go online and buy products, the more
people who see adverts, the more money Google and other providers or
retailers will make. When companies talk about democratising technology, in
fact they re talking about their bottom line, and the difference between
profit and loss.

So HTC hasn t plucked the name for its new handset out of nowhere: it s a
product that deserves to spread like wildfire, because it…

Google I/O: Android 2.2 brings more HTML 5

Android 2.2, codenamed Froyo, will be up to five times faster at running apps and three times faster at browsing.

…”We continue to partner with Apple in many, many areas. What we said was not necessarily directed at Apple only but a very strong theme of the web is openness, inclusion and choice and that’s where we stand.”Data in the cloudSome of the features in Froyo will have to be built into new apps, like the ability to back up not just the device but also the data inside applications and the cloud messaging service. “This is much more than a push notification service designed to make up for a lack of basic features like multitasking,” said Gundotra and used it to demonstrate sending directions from Google Maps on the desktop directly to the phone. This is also the way the next version of the Android Marketplace will let you send apps (and possibly music) directly to your phone over the…
