…Normally, programming is considered the playground of the nerd elite. Coding applications, particularly complex ones, is so tough that even the pros screw it up pretty regularly. (That’s why we have bug fixes.) The geeks at Google want to simplify the process of creating apps, streamlining it so that even a kid could do it. And of course, if fresh-faced kids are gonna learn to write apps, Google would prefer they did it for the Android mobile platform.

That’s the purpose of Google’s new DIY programming tool, App Inventor. Rather than force users to memorize obscure commands and confusing syntax, App Inventor uses simple “blocks” that allow creators to visualize how an app will behave. App Inventor is simple in execution, but hides powerful capabilities such as the ability to send text messages, interact with a GPS unit, update Twitter and read text aloud. For now, the tool is aimed at the education market and entering a private beta, which you can sign up for here, but we expect App Inventor will soon be…

Just take a look at what Google has crafted! Read through the tutorials, or watch the video after the break. It’s simple yet so functional. If you want to get in on the action, you need to sign up for the App Inventor for Android closed beta. You might have to lie about being an educator, though…

I think we might actually be seeing a resurgence in the teaching of programming and logical, syntactic thinking! First Microsoft Small Basic, and now this! There was even some talk of a HyperCard-esque development tool emerging on iOS, but…

…Apple insisted developers to submit their iOS 4 applications as soon as possible, so they will be ready when iOS 4 is released to the public on June 21! But now read this: According to TechCrunch, developers of non-iOS-4 applications are supposedly experiencing longer approval times to get their products into Apple’s App Store to begin with.
Apple has got its 10,000th native iPad application, doubling the size of the iPad App Store in just over six weeks. The landmark itself comes just two months after the release of the tablet device, though it’s but a small part of the total number of apps available for both Apple’s iPad and iPhone: more than 200,000.
