Millions of Android users hit by malicious data theft app

An app distributed by Google’s Android Market has collected private data from millions of users and forwarded it to servers China, validating Apple’s uniquely strong stance on mobile security in the iPhone App Store.

…Apps must also be signed by a certificate created by Apple, which makes it much harder for malicious developers to anonymously distribute software designed to cause problems or steal data. Apple’s security measures also make such efforts less attractive financially, despite the iOS platform’s installed base being much larger than Android’s….

Firefox Mobile & Weave on the N900

Today I’d like to tell you about Firefox Mobile on the N900, running in conjunction with the new Mozilla Weave web service. I’ve been testing them out on my handset for about a month now since the beta release of Fennec (the codename for Firefox Mobile). The N900 is the first device to get Firefox Mobile but it should also appear on Google Android.

…back buttons, a bookmark this page shortcut and access to the app settings.
…and a drag to the right
To the left you have tabs and access to Weave integration. I have to admit I was dubious about this interface design at first and I didn’t think dragging the whole page to the side would work. It actually becomes second nature pretty quickly and the ability to have multiple pages open in tabs is very cool. I also like the fact that the awesome bar works the same as its desktop counterpart. If you start typing part of an address you’ve visited before it will narrow down helpful suggestions. This actually speeds up browsing a lot and in my laziness I use this feature far more than bookmarks. Having it integrated with your other Firefox installations through Weave makes this much more powerful too. Firefox Mobile helps you fill out forms quicker and jump between fields which is handy. Overall the adapted UI works well, despite my initial reservations I got used to it very quickly.
Performance:
This is the area…

Motorola Droid’s next update to be Android 2.1

The browser’s now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4. There’s no word on timing, and for all our source knows, this build could still very well fail testing — goodness knows it’s happened with plenty of pre-production firmwares in Verizon’s past. We’ll keep our ear to the ground and you do the same.

…We’ve just gotten the inside line on the next Droid update that’s making the rounds through Verizon’s testing department from one of our trusted sources, and overall, it looks like this should take users 95 percent of the way to curing pangs of Nexus One envy. Here’s what we’ve got:

It’s based on Android 2.1. The build currently being circulated is identified as 2.1 version 1, mirroring the update just pushed to the Nexus One last week.
Google Goggles is now pre-installed (no matter how unhelpful it may be).
The browser’s now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4. Huzzah! No Flash, but then again, we weren’t really expecting that.
Interestingly, the home screen’s still got the same look as 2.0.1, meaning it doesn’t adopt the Nexus One’s rotating 3D grid of app icons — it’s still got the pull-up drawer tab at the bottom.
No active wallpapers. Bummer!
The news and weather widgets introduced on the Nexus One are included. Maybe certain capabilities of 2.1 are going to be restricted to devices…

Google’s Android platform: not so open after all

Third-party Android application developers are beginning to question Google’s commitment to making Android an open platform following the revelation that a select few developers have been receiving special access to new versions of the Android SDK under non-disclosure agreements.

…”I don’t think the biggest issue here is who has and doesn’t have access to the SDK. I think the main issue here is communication or lack thereof. Google embraced the development community and touted how they were going to build this platform with the help of the development community. Somewhere along the line, this ’seemed’ to change. I say seemed because this could have always been part of Google’s strategy,” wrote third-party developer Ken Adair in a message to the Android discussion list. “The problem is they have failed to nurture the relationship with the development community. They have cut them off from the information that was once flowing and left them to speculate and wonder. In response, you are seeing many that feel cheated and betrayed.”…
