Sorry Apple - Why I Turned In My iPhone and Went Android

Apple has already fallen behind. Sorry Apple. I’ve personally purchased an iPhone 4 and I have regrets. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great phone and probably the best today

…T has been dramatically underdelivering in terms of quality and functionality, but this did not drive me away from Apple as much as the lack of choice did. Not even the announcement of an imminent offering of a Verizon iPhone could have kept me on Apple.

I have been publicly and openly thinking about moving off iPhone for more than six months. At the time of the December post, none of us knew what the iPhone 4 would look like. We didn’t know if Apple would open up to new carriers. We didn’t know what the Nexus One would offer. We didn’t know about the HTC EVO or the HTC Hero or the HTC Aria or the Droid Incredible. But the writing was on the wall that change was afoot, and we would have to be in wait and see mode. I waited, and what I saw told me that the speed at which Android has improved and the speed at which new models are developed and released is far outpacing Apple. In my personal experience of using the HTC EVO after receiving a free unit from Google I/O, the gaps in the platform were very few,…

Apple’s iPad passes Google Android in total browser us

Apple’s iPad passes Google Android in total browser usage share.

…More people are browsing the Web via an iPad than on an Android-powered device, according to new monthly browser usage data from one analytics firm.

In just three months on the market, Apple’s iPad has come to represent 0.17 percent of all Web browser traffic tracked by Net Applications. The iPad’s June total managed to exceed Android, which represented 0.14 percent of all Web browsing traffic.
Behind both of them was another iOS-powered device from Apple, the iPod touch. In June, the iPod touch took 0.12 percent of the Web browser share, according to Net Applications.
The iPad has seen a steady climb since it was released in April, notching 0.03 percent in the first month, when it was only available in the U.S. In May, the numbers tripled to 0.09 percent, only to nearly double again in June to the 0.17 percent figure that pushed it past Android.
The numbers, however, do not mean that there are more iPads on the market than Android devices. But the stats do indicate that a far higher percentage of iPad…

Your Browser in Five Years

The next big computing platform won’t be Apple’s Mac OS, Google’s Android, or Microsoft’s Windows. It’s already here–and it’s the Web.

…What will your Web browser look like in 2015? Five years doesn’t always bring dramatic change to some technologies–today’s desktop PC, for instance, isn’t that different from its 2005 predecessor–but browsers are undergoing major changes that will alter our day-to-day computing lives.
Not only will Web browsers become commonplace in cars, but they’ll also incorporate voice recognition, text-to-speech, and touchless gesture controls for applications where keypads, touchpads, and even touchscreens can be either inconvenient (smartphones) or downright dangerous (when driving). Browsers will stream Internet radio to our cars, and perhaps even adopt a 3D-style interface–only without the clunky glasses.
“You’re going to see tremendous innovation in the browser space in the coming years,” says Linus Upson, Google’s vice president of engineering. “We really want the Web as a platform to get to the point where you can do anything on the Web that you can do on Windows, the Mac, or the iPhone.”
Google…

Maemo vs Android

There is no doubt that Linux will be the dominant player in the mobile market by the end of 2010. This is largely thanks to Google’s Android OS, which has been appearing on more handsets than I can count the past few months. Android is not the only mobile Linux operating system (however, it is easily the most popular) that exists.

…Speaking of widgets - I highly suggest you find one for toggling your
device’s WiFi on and off. If you do not have one of these you have to dig
through three layers of settings menus to toggle it. Want to connect to a
new access point? Three layers of menus again. I think something used as
often as a WiFi connection should be more readily available for usage.
Toggling your data connection on Android is just as annoying and you cannot
even disable your data fully with a single switch. When you uncheck the
“data connection” in the settings manager, you are informed that some
applications might still use background data.To fully disable your 2g/3g -
e.g., to save some battery juice - you need to crawl through each of your
individual applications that might use background data and be sure they are
off. Inconvenient to say the least. I am sure there is an application out
there to fully toggle it off it with one button - but it is not included by
default, and it should be….

Google Android Hello World! with Eclipse

How to write your first Hello World! application for Google Android. A simple tutorial.

…Well Mr. Vivek! Hopefully you have installed ADT(i have discussed in the post). The problem will be with the Installation of Android SDK. Please make sure that you did the step: Installing Android SDK exactly as i have discussed. You must have to locate the complete extracted directory instead specifying some folder inside. And make sure that the directory you specify is accepted.
Best of Luck…

Linux is going mainstream

The truth is that Linux is well on it’s way to being a mainstream operating system. The bad news is that this will not happen the way many of us envisioned. Company that will have the biggest share in this could very well be Google with their Android and Chrome OS.

…company that will have the biggest share in this could very well be Google with their Android and Chrome OS. So we should all be happy about this. We wanted Linux to become very popular. Yet, there is something annoying about a company that is already so massive being the one to take Linux to the next step. On the plus side Ubuntu has a bright future ahead of it and may also gain much of the market share, but this may not happen before Google dominates the markets first.
As awesome as Linux is on the desktop many will use Linux first on their Phone. Most of them will not know that they are running Linux, which is also a bit of a let down. On the positive side the smart phone market is projected to have a market worth of 150.3 Billion dollars by 2014, that is a lot of revenue being generated by companies dealing in Linux based smart phones. So once Linux via Droid and or Chrome dominates the Mobile market and people including open source critics learn they are using Linux, what will happen next? Will Google…

Speedy Android 2.2 hits with tethering, push framework, more

Android 2.2, codenamed Froyo, was unveiled this morning at the Google I/O developer conference. The new version introduces an impressive assortment of new features and performance enhancements.

…Android 2.2 turns your phone into a WiFi hotspot

Another compelling new feature in Froyo is support for wireless tethering. It will be possible to use an Android handset as a WiFi hotspot, making its 3G connectivity available to other devices. During the keynote, Google demoed the feature by showing how to make an iPad connect to the Internet through a Nexus One.

An open platform

During the entire keynote presentation, Google stressed the openness of the Android platform and emphasized its technical advantages relative to Apple’s iPhone. Attitude towards browser plugins is one major area where the platforms differ. Google says that Adobe’s Flash player and AIR runtime will be fully supported on Froyo. Supporting Flash was an easy choice, said Gundrota, because Android is an inclusive platform and Google is committed to having the most comprehensive browsing experience.

Opportunities in mobile advertising were a major factor that compelled Google to enter the phone space. The company is starting to take…

How To: Try Android Froyo On Your Computer

Google’s next version of Android, 2.2 “Froyo”, is obviously a huge step, and we’ve done what we can to explain what so great about it. But enough reading, why not try it for yourself?

…downloading it will do nothing but give you new download options, so go ahead and do that.

4. From the new download list, select and download the following four items (This will take a few minutes you’re downloading the actual OS here, as well as some extra tools):

5. Once the downloads are completed and installed, navigate back to the “Virtual Devices” section in the left column of the SDK manager. On the right side of the window, click New.
6. This is the windows where you can define the parameters of your imaginary, emulated Android phone. Aside from the mandatory Android 2.2 target setting, you’ll need to decide on a few settings. You can get by with a small virtual SD card, so feel free to set that at a few hundred megabytes. For the screen resolution, don’t necessarily choose the highest setting (WVGA854) it’s 854 pixels tall, which may be taller than your computer’s screen, if you have a MacBook or other smaller widescreen notebook.
7. Click Create AVD. Your computer might lock up for a second, and…

Mobile market up, smartphones up, Android and iPhone way up

The overall mobile market posted double digit growth for the first quarter of 2010 after a disappointing 2009. Apple’s iPhone OS and especially Google’s Android platform continue to grow leaps and bounds as smartphones slowly break into the top of the mobile phone sales charts.

…The big winners are, as is becoming commonplace, iPhone OS and Android. iPhone OS market share improved considerably year-over-year, with its 112 percent unit growth enough to move it up to 15.4 percent among smartphones globally. However, a staggering 806 percent unit growth pushed Android well ahead of Windows Mobile into fourth place. Both iPhone OS and Android are poised to catch up to the BlackBerry platform in short order. Apple will have its work cut out for it to stay ahead of Android globally, even as the open source mobile platform has by some accounts surpassed iPhone OS-based smartphones domestically.

“To compete in such a crowded market, manufacturers need to tightly integrate hardware, user interface, and cloud and social networking services if their solutions are to appeal to users,” Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, said in a statement. “Just adding a QWERTY keyboard will not make a device fit the communication habits of today’s various consumer segments.”

However, Cozza…
