News site Bloomberg confirms, and also says the device will be based on Google’s Android operating system. We already have an idea what a Chrome OS tablet might look like (see video above), and as TechCrunch points out, it’s reasonable to think some of the same ideas could make their way to an Android-based Google Tablet. Google users eager to jump to a tablet world who aren’t so keen on the iPad should be excited to see how this pans out….

…Four different versions of Android are running on smartphones right now, leaving some hot new applications available only for top-tier phones, and potential buyers wondering whether their devices will seem obsolete in less than a year. Google must feel this pain because, according to Engadget, they’re working to make Android phones more update-friendly with their next two platform releases, dubbed “Froyo” and “Gingerbread.” By detaching Google’s own apps Gmail, the Camera and photo Gallery, Googles, etc. from the main Android operating system, Google can make the new features that users want available in the Market as updates, rather than waiting on HTC, Motorola, T-Mobile,…

Google cracks animal translation riddle … for Android

“That’s amazing,” mutters a farmer, after learning through Google Translate for Animals that his porcine wonder, Bella, believes he and/or the Google chap smell just swell. (Of course, it’s unclear whether the farmer is speaking of the technology or the pig’s conclusion, but that doesn’t matter when talking about a breakthrough of this magnitude.)

Back Up Your SMS Messages to a Gmail Label on Android

…Android: If you’re rocking an Android phone without the Google Voice experience, you can still back up and read your SMS messages online. The free SMS Backup app automatically transfers your SMS messages to a Gmail label as they come in. You’ll need to enable IMAP in your Gmail settings and give SMS Backup your Gmail username and password. After that, though, the app can back up the SMS messages you’ve stored on your phone to a Gmail label “SMS” by default, but you can change it to anything you want. You can choose whether to have those messages appear as unread when they land in your label or not.
As Lifehacker reader Jeff wrote in his recommendation, it’s a great secondary database to have handy. Ask new contacts to text you with their contact info, and you can grab it later from Gmail and add the details to your contacts right there. If you use a service with SMS reminders, it’s a good place to keep track of them. In general, it’s also a fun way to track the messages you traded back and forth with…

Adobe has announced that Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR are both coming to smartphones, starting with devices running Google’s Android operating system.

We’ve been expecting to see Flash Player 10.1 for a while, but it looks like it should be coming pretty soon. A beta version has already been made available to mobile developers and content providers. Adobe says it should be available to the general public in the first half of the year. While the player is initially coming to Android, support for BlackBerry, Symbian, Palm WebOS and Windows Mobile are also on the way.

Adobe AIR is something else altogether. The platform currently allows developers to write applications that can run on Windows, Linux, and Mac desktops. By expanding AIR to mobile devices, developers will basically be able to write applications in Flash that can run on all sorts of devices, which is pretty awesome…

New & Improved Gmail, Google Calendar for iPhone and Android

Google has just pushed out a new Gmail engine for iPhone and Android users, adding features like (some) offline access, a “floaty bar” for archive, delete, and more, and quicker access to search and tasks.

…The new interface also now displays email labels, and everything should run quicker and smoother in general. iPhone (and iPod touch) users will need to be running the latest 2.2.1 operating system for access to the latest and greatest features and interface. The new and improved Gmail for mobile is rolling out over the course of the day, and it works for both regular Gmail and Google Apps accounts.
While they were at it, Google also pushed out an update for Google Calendar for mobile users, adding event management for responding to invitations and changing your attendance status from your phone. Likewise, the Google Calendar updates work with Android or the iPhone and require the 2.2.1 iPhone OS.
