Motorola Pledges Cheaper Android Phones



Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha said in an analyst call Thursday that many of next year’s Motorola phones will run the Google Android OS, continuing a big bet on the Linux-based system.

Jha went into more detail on the service, but it was all pretty vague.

“The service is not an app store service. It’s an end to end user experience delivery in something like social messaging and social media … aggregating and delivering all of that in a much more user consumable way,” Jha said. Motorola’s service will not conflict with carrier services, and might be free, he said.

But Motorola will maintain compatibility with other manufacturers, and will not spin their own OS branch out of Android, Jha said.

“We are completely committed to not fragmenting the Android ecosystem,” he said.

Motorola will develop all of their Android phones in-house, but will bring in third parties to build lower-end feature phones that don’t run Android, Jha said. But Motorola will be shifting their focus to devices with smartphone features, he said.
