If the Nexus One is the first ’super phone,’ as Google’s Andy Rubin put it, Lenovo’s new Le Phone is its nemesis: an Android-powered ’super phone’ running a gigahertz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with special powers of its own, but absolutely no Google services visible—not even the Android Market.
…This results in the most highly customized Android experience I’ve ever seen. Le Phone launches with a unique start screen displaying four icons for phone calls, email, instant messaging and IM. Lenovo calls it the “unified communication panel.” A weather report and calendar alerts float at the top of the screen.Home screens are taken over by large, swipeable Internet widgets, showing things like stock prices and favorite Web sites. The widgets use “push technology” to automatically get the latest info from the Internet. You can also jump to a menu of round (not square) icons showing built-in apps or apps downloaded from Lenovo’s own, special app store.
You can navigate in some apps by tilting the screen. To minimize or switch apps, you reduce them to cards like on the Palm Pre. Also like the Pre, Le Phone has a “gesture area” below the screen where you swipe to cause actions on the phone. The interface is absolutely beautiful and it looks almost nothing like Google’s official, approved Android system….
