At LugRadio Live in San Francisco, Google developer Robert Love gave a presentation about the Android mobile platform and described some of the ways that it will empower users and developers. Google still has some work ahead of it before Android is ready for prime time, however.
…Indeed, some of the process problems that emerged after the initial SDK launch in December demonstrate the validity of that argument. As we noted then, releasing early is only helpful when infrastructure is in place to facilitate proper collaboration. Google will be in a much better position to work closely with the community on improving the source code once the platform reaches the requisite level of completeness following the launch later this year. On the other side of the argument, some third-party developers say that being locked out right now deprives them of an opportunity to help shape the underlying design and infrastructure of the platform. Google’s reluctance to open up all of the source code at this time is entirely understandable, but it creates the perception that the broader community is being excluded from certain aspects of the dialog between Google and Open Handset Alliance members about what the platform should be like….
